The Journey: QMJHL Quick Starts — 10 Prospects Turning Heads in 2026–27

The Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League has long been an important source of NHL talent, but identifying the next wave of fantasy-relevant prospects requires looking beyond the scoring leaderboard. Early-season production can reveal genuine developmental progress, particularly when younger players take on larger responsibilities or overlooked prospects begin producing at a level that demands attention.

The opening stretch of 2026–27 has provided plenty to examine. Philippe Veilleux has emerged as the league’s dominant scorer, Victoriaville features several impressive offensive performers, and Québec boasts an intriguing collection of draft-eligible talent. Meanwhile, young defensemen are demonstrating why their development deserves attention.

As always, age, opportunity, NHL affiliation, and sustainability matter. A 20-year-old producing at a point-per-game pace isn’t necessarily more valuable than a 17-year-old doing the same. With that context in mind, here are ten QMJHL players making compelling early-season statements.

Philippe Veilleux, LW, Val-d’Or Foreurs – Double Overager

Veilleux has moved beyond being simply an interesting junior scorer. With 36 points through 16 games, he has established himself as the QMJHL’s most productive offensive player. His 79 shots, nearly five per game, are particularly encouraging because they indicate his production isn’t entirely dependent on teammates creating opportunities. Veilleux has combined excellent shot volume with strong playmaking, building on consecutive 40-goal seasons and point totals of 87 and 96.

The fascinating part is that Veilleux remains undrafted despite his offensive accomplishments. At 19-years-old, scouts have already had multiple opportunities to evaluate him, but sustained production above two points per game is difficult to dismiss. For dynasty managers, his path to an NHL organization may involve a free-agent contract rather than the draft. The challenge is determining whether he possesses NHL-translatable offensive tools or is simply becoming exceptionally effective against junior competition.

James Scantlebury, C, Québec Remparts — 2027 Draft Eligible

Scantlebury has made one of the strongest early-season statements among QMJHL players eligible for the 2027 NHL Draft. His 24 points in 15 games place him among the league’s scoring leaders, an impressive accomplishment for a 17-year-old competing against older players. His balanced goal and assist production suggest an offensive game extending beyond simply finding open ice and finishing opportunities. Even more encouraging is his pNHLe, which has climbed from 42 in 2025–26 to 77 in 2026–27, moving him from below the second-line threshold into the first-line potential range. That substantial increase suggests his offensive development is accelerating and strengthens the case for legitimate NHL scoring upside.

Scantlebury’s age-relative production is what makes him particularly attractive. At 5-10, he doesn’t possess the physical profile of some highly regarded centers, placing greater importance on skating, processing speed, and creating offense under pressure. His 26% shooting percentage will likely regress, but his 47 shots provide an encouraging foundation. His pNHLe trajectory is particularly notable because it suggests his production is becoming increasingly meaningful when translated to NHL expectations. For dynasty managers, he offers one of the strongest combinations of current production, developmental momentum, and future fantasy upside.

Egor Shilov, C, Victoriaville Tigres — Colorado Avalanche

Shilov deserves more attention from dynasty managers. Selected 43rd overall by Colorado in 2026, the Russian center has recorded 26 points through 16 games, emerging as one of the QMJHL’s leading scorers. His 63 shots demonstrate an aggressive offensive approach, while his balanced production makes him more intriguing than someone benefiting from an isolated finishing streak. Following an 82-point season, his current pace suggests continued development rather than an unexpected breakout.

Shilov’s fantasy appeal centers on his ability to control offensive possessions, anticipate defensive coverage, and create opportunities through skill and decision-making. His playmaking instincts and potential power-play utility are especially appealing in dynasty formats. Colorado can afford to let him develop without rushing his NHL arrival. Among the already-drafted prospects featured here, Shilov is one of my preferred targets because his offensive development appears to be progressing faster than expected.

Alexei Vlasov, LW, Victoriaville Tigres – Overager

Vlasov has developed into one of the QMJHL’s most dangerous offensive players. After opening with eight goals in eight games, he reached 23 points through 13 contests. His 60 shots, averaging more than 4.6 per game, suggest that he is consistently generating opportunities rather than relying exclusively on unsustainable finishing. Combined with his 80-point performance last season, these results indicate impressive offensive development. That progression is also reflected in his Hockey Prospecting profile, where his NHLe has climbed from 12 in 2025 to 31 in 2026, a substantial improvement in his projected NHL-equivalent production.

What makes Vlasov particularly intriguing is the contrast between his offensive development and his uncertain NHL outlook. Hockey Prospecting currently assigns him an 18% star probability and a 53% NHLer probability, suggesting a meaningful chance of reaching the NHL but considerably less certainty about becoming an impact fantasy producer. His developmental comparables include Calle Järnkrok, Chris Stewart, and Alexander Steen, illustrating a range of potential outcomes. Questions about his skating, offensive translation, and ability to create against tighter defensive coverage remain important, but his improving NHLe suggests his progress deserves attention. For dynasty managers, Vlasov represents an interesting high-risk, high-reward prospect whose statistical development may be outpacing his broader reputation.

Carter Meyer, C, Québec Remparts — 2027 Draft Eligible

Meyer’s transition from the U.S. National Team Development Program to Québec has been somewhat disappointing, particularly considering the considerable expectations surrounding him entering his draft year. Through 15 games, he has collected five goals and 17 points, respectable production but hardly the dominant offensive performance many anticipated from such a highly touted prospect. Playing in the QMJHL was supposed to provide an opportunity to showcase his offensive abilities and potentially elevate his draft stock. Instead, Meyer has been overshadowed by players such as James Scantlebury. NHL Central Scouting still assigned him an A rating in October, identifying him as a potential first-round selection, but his statistical progression raises legitimate questions about whether he is developing as quickly as expected.

Mason Black’s NHL Rank King Application reinforces those concerns. Meyer’s pNHLe has actually declined from 62 in 2025–26 to 59 in 2026–27, a modest regression that places him below the first-line potential threshold and within the second-line projection range. That’s particularly disappointing given the expectation that moving to the QMJHL would accelerate his offensive development. His pNHLe similarity scores include Jared McCann, Raphael Lavoie, and Zemgus Girgensons, illustrating the considerable range of possible outcomes. Meyer remains an intelligent playmaker with legitimate NHL potential, but for dynasty managers, his early performance has done little to strengthen the case for high-end fantasy upside. The talent remains, but he needs to demonstrate greater individual offensive creation and meaningful improvement as the season progresses to justify his preseason reputation.

Owen Conrad, D, Charlottetown Islanders — Doubler Overager

The double overager is off to a hot start as the 19-year-old blueliner has maintained a point-per-game pace through 17 contests, collecting five goals and 12 assists. At 6-2 and 209 pounds, Conrad possesses the size to become a physically effective NHL defender, while his offensive production suggests a willingness to contribute beyond traditional defensive responsibilities. His 12 assists are particularly encouraging for fantasy purposes, but his Hockey Prospecting profile paints a considerably less optimistic picture. His NHLe has remained almost completely stagnant, moving from 11 in 2024 to 9 in 2025 and back to 11 in 2026, suggesting that his impressive junior production has yet to translate into meaningful improvement in his NHL-equivalent offensive projection.

Hockey Prospecting’s probability model reinforces those concerns, assigning Conrad just a 2% star probability in his D+1 season, down from six percent in his original draft year, while his NHLer probability has declined from 45% to 32%. Those are relatively modest projections for someone currently producing at a point-per-game pace from the blue line. The disconnect raises questions about how much of his offensive success comes from favorable deployment and junior-level opportunities rather than translatable offensive tools. His commitment to Merrimack provides another developmental opportunity, but Conrad remains a speculative dynasty investment. For managers seeking offensive defensemen, his current production is worth monitoring, although Hockey Prospecting suggests considerably more caution than his raw scoring totals might indicate.

Malik L’Italien, D, Halifax Mooseheads — 2027 Draft Eligible

Malik L’Italien might offer more long-term upside than his scoring totals suggest. The 6-4 defenseman has collected ten points through 14 games, an encouraging offensive contribution for someone whose appeal extends beyond generating points. After recording 24 points as a 16-year-old rookie, his combination of size, mobility, and defensive awareness has attracted significant attention. NHL Central Scouting assigned him an A rating for the 2027 NHL Draft, reinforcing his status as a potential first-round selection. His development is also reflected in Mason Black’s NHL Rank King application, where his pNHLe has increased from 44 in 2025–26 to 56 in 2026–27, suggesting meaningful improvement in his projected NHL offensive production.

For fantasy managers, the distinction between NHL upside and fantasy upside remains particularly important with L’Italien. Although his pNHLe has improved by nearly 12 points, it remains within the second-pairing offensive potential range for defensemen, rather than indicating elite fantasy upside. His NHL Rank King similarity scores include Nikolas Brouillard, Xavier Ouellet, and Brandon Gormley, comparisons that reinforce the uncertainty surrounding his eventual offensive ceiling. Nevertheless, his combination of physical tools, defensive foundation, and improving offensive projection makes him an attractive long-term prospect. If he continues expanding his offensive responsibilities, particularly on the power play, his fantasy ceiling could rise considerably. For dynasty managers, L’Italien remains a worthwhile investment, although his NHL potential currently appears more convincing than his projected fantasy production.

Caiden Pellegrino, C, Rimouski Océanic — 2027 Draft Eligible

Pellegrino is one of the more interesting emerging names because his production carries considerable age-relative significance. The American center has recorded 20 points in 16 games, establishing himself as an important contributor to Rimouski’s offense. Recognized as the QMJHL’s 2027 Prospect of the Week in early October, Pellegrino has continued producing beyond his initial breakout. His transition from prep-school hockey to major junior has been encouraging, and his early success suggests that his offensive instincts are translating well against stronger competition.

At 5-10, Pellegrino must demonstrate that his offensive instincts can compensate for his relatively modest physical profile. His playmaking production is encouraging, while improved individual shot generation would strengthen his projection. NHL Central Scouting included him on its preliminary watch list, although he remains outside the leading draft conversation. That makes him particularly interesting for dynasty managers looking to identify emerging talent before its value increases. With his offensive development already attracting attention, Pellegrino could become an intriguing sleeper in the 2027 NHL Draft.

Alexis Joseph, C, Saint John Sea Dogs — 2027 Draft Eligible

Joseph doesn’t possess the spectacular early scoring numbers of several other players featured here, but his long-term projection may be among the strongest. The 6-4 center recorded 60 points in 54 games as a rookie last season and opened 2026–27 with 14 points through 14 contests. Joseph combines offensive skill with the size, reach, and puck-protection ability NHL organizations value. His preliminary A rating from NHL Central Scouting reinforces his potential first-round status, even if his raw production has not been quite as eye-catching as some of the other names on this list.

Joseph is precisely the type of player dynasty managers shouldn’t overlook because others have more points in November. Mason Black's NHL Rank King application helps illustrate both the appeal and the risk. His pNHLe has dropped from 89 in 2025–26 to 56 in 2026–27, a notable decline that suggests his current offensive translation is not keeping pace with the most optimistic preseason expectations. At the same time, his similarity scores include Sebastian Aho, Fraser Minten, and Anthony Duclair, highlight a wide range of possible outcomes and reinforce why he remains so intriguing. The key question is whether Joseph can convert his physical advantages and underlying skill into more consistent offensive dominance. His current production may not fully capture his long-term appeal, but his pNHLe trend does add a note of caution for dynasty managers expecting immediate star-level development.

Jamie Glance, RW, Moncton Wildcats — 2027 Draft Eligible

Glance rounds out the list because his combination of early production and draft recognition makes him particularly relevant for dynasty managers. With 21 points through 16 games, Glance has established himself among the QMJHL’s more productive young forwards. His impressive start is especially noteworthy because NHL Central Scouting assigned him an A rating in its preliminary rankings, indicating that evaluators already consider him a potential first-round selection.

That combination of production and scouting recognition makes Glance more appealing than several older junior players putting up comparable numbers. The challenge will be demonstrating that his offensive contributions remain sustainable as opponents adjust and defensive responsibilities increase. His continued development as a scorer and playmaker will determine how high his fantasy ceiling can climb. For dynasty managers preparing for the 2027 draft, Glance belongs on the watchlist now, before his reputation potentially catches up with his production.

Final Thoughts

The QMJHL’s early-season standouts offer very different dynasty opportunities. James Scantlebury and Egor Shilov have strengthened their fantasy outlooks, while Carter Meyer and Alexis Joseph remain highly regarded despite disappointing early pNHLe trends. Meanwhile, Philippe Veilleux and Alexei Vlasov are producing impressive numbers but still face questions about how their offense will translate to the NHL.

For dynasty managers, the key is identifying sustainable development rather than chasing raw production. Shot generation, expanding roles, and improving pNHLe can help separate genuine breakouts from temporary scoring surges and uncover value before the rest of the fantasy community catches on.
