Flashes of Promise

Peter Mueller

Their win percentage is better than that of the defending Stanley Cup Champions, yet everyone – fans and media alike – have already written them off. This is because the Phoenix Coyotes are approximately one year into a full-blown rebuilding plan and their team consists of Shane Doan, Ed Jovanovski and a whole bunch of kids.

But given the way the ‘Yotes have played since the acquisition of goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov and how those wet-behind-the-ears kids have performed, perhaps they should be taken a little more seriously.

These three Kings

Kopitar, Brown and Cammalleri

If you happen to own the entire top line for Los Angeles, it was quite possible you were turning cartwheels late Thursday night. Anze Kopitar, Mike Cammalleri and Dustin Brown combined for a whopping 10 points and you can’t help but think that the best is yet to come from this young trio.

Enstrom turning heads

Tobias Enstrom

Only a handful of NHL teams can boast two elite offensive players who are in the same class as Atlanta’s dynamic duo of Marian Hossa and Ilya Kovalchuk. So you can imagine the potential production of a skilled rearguard if he can stick on that top power play unit.

Clearly, the team has found one in rookie Tobias Enstrom, a diminutive blueliner who came over from Sweden.

Narrowing the Gap

Nicklas Backstrom

In most preseason fantasy guides, Washington’s Nicklas Backstrom was predicted to be the top-scoring rookie this season. As Chicago’s Patrick Kane started piling up the points, that opinion quickly changed. For a while there, it looked to be a two-man race between teammates Kane and Jonathan Toews.

Not so fast.
