Jhonas Enroth swapped for Anders Lindback

Jhonasenroth

What will this mean to Enroth, Lindback…..and Kari Lehtonen?  Find out here.

Fantasy Impact:

The Dallas Stars have acquired Jhonas Enroth in exchange for Anders Lindback and a conditional third round draft pick (or a second rounder if Enroth wins four playoff games for the Stars).

The Stars get:

A minimum, they now have a more capable back-up for the rest of the season, before Enroth hits the UFA market.  But with Enroth and Kari Lehtonen having comparable overall save percentages for 2014-15, and with Enroth's coming while backstopping what could be argued is a minor league team masquerading as an NHL squad, an argument can be made that he's the better goalie at this very moment – enough so that he could be looked upon as a 1B option if Lehtonen falters.

The Sabres get:

The enigmatic (i.e., a nice way of saying hugely disappointing) Lindback, who – wait, are you sitting down – was actually the centerpiece of a deal that netted Nashville two second round picks and a third rounder from Tampa Bay not even three years ago.  But it's been all downhill since then for Lindback, culminating this season with a GAA that would be great if only he was an American League starting pitcher (3.71) and a save percentage (87.5%) that's second to last in the entire NHL among goalies who've appeared in ten or more games.

Fantasy Players Impacted:

Lindback's value couldn't go any lower; and now at least he could get added saves by virtue of playing more than once every six games, and for a squad that surrenders 34.8 shots per game (Dallas gives up an average of 31.0).  But the key is Lindback is on a one year deal, and had laid an egg in Dallas despite likely playing for his very NHL future, so there's no reason to expect he'd improve in Buffalo, especially with a worse team in front of him.

Instead, figure on impending UFA Michal Neuvirth receiving the bulk of the starts for Buffalo (unless, and this seems highly unlikely, the Sabres trade him too).  Unlike Lindback, who seems to have passed the point of no return in terms of an NHL future, Neuvirth might still be able to convince an NHL team to give him a shot for 2015-16.  After all, a 90.7% SV% for that team is pretty respectable.  Look Neuvirth’s to perhaps even increase his SV% and for his GAA to come down closer to 3.00 as he seizes upon the chance to play for an NHL deal for next season.

There's also arguably a small impact to skaters.  Trevor Daley and Jordie Benn – the two most minus Dallas defensemen – might see a slight benefit in plus/minus to the extent they were victimized by Lindback's poor play.  In a similar vein, if you happen to have guys like Mike Weber, Josh Gorges, and Rasmus Ristolainen on your fantasy team due to their secondary category output, they might see their plus/minus be dragged down even more.  And this won't make newly acquired Zach Bogosian's landing in Buffalo be any less bumpy in terms of plus/minus either.

Fantasy Players this helps, in order:

Jonas Enroth

Michael Neuvirth

Kari Lehtonen (if this gives him added rest and light a fire under him)

Trevor Daley

Jordie Benn

Fantasy Players this hurts, in order:

Anders Lindback (mostly because it signals he's at the end of the line in the NHL)

Kari Lehtonen (if he falters and/or Enroth shines)

Jussi Rynas

Jack Campbell

Buffalo defensemen
