Fantasy Impact: The Colorado Avalanche have acquired Eric Gelinas from the New Jersey Devils for a third-round draft pick in 2017.
The Avs get: an inconsistent puck-moving defenseman who has watched his opportunities dwindle with New Jersey after making a big splash as a rookie in 2013-14.
The Devils get: almost a re-do. Gelinas was drafted 54th overall, which is in the second round. They turned that pick into a third-rounder.
Fantasy Players Impacted: Gelinas currently sits at six points. It's hard for your fantasy value to get any lower than a six-point player. So his value rises. How will he do? Well, the Avs paid a relatively big price for him so they won't want to see that pick go to waste. So right off the bat he will be given hefty power-play time. This boots Francois Beauchemin off the PP unit, where he wasn't a fit (but was getting a ton of time there thanks to a very hot start to his season). Gelinas is worthy of a pick up. Lately, the Avs have been using Tyson Barrie with four forwards on a 1A PP unit and then Erik Johnson with Beauchemin on a 1B PP unit.
In New Jersey, Gelinas wasn't really seeing a lot of power-play time anyway. All this means it that Damon Severson won't be a healthy scratch anymore. We hope.
