The Ottawa Senators have acquired agitating winger Alexandre Burrows from the Vancouver Canucks for prospect Jonathan Dahlen. The Sens are on the cusp of signing Burrows to a two-year contract extension.
The Senators get: a gritty, under-your-skin winger who has shown in the past that he can complement a scoring line and hold his own. However, he’s 35 years old and those days are behind him. These days, Burrows is at best a 15-goal, 30-point player. Between Tommy Wingels’ hits and Burrows getting under the other team’s skin, the Senators are buckling up for the playoffs.
The Canucks get: one of Ottawa’s top prospects in Dahlen, a potential scoring-line forward who was drafted in the second round. This year, in the Swedish second league (Allsvenskan), Dahlen sits sixth in scoring with 42 points in 44 games. He’s still a good two or three years away, but with Ottawa it was probably closer to four.
Fantasy Players Impacted: Burrows offers some short-term intrigue due to the ‘new team adrenalin’ factor. Look for him to line up on the J-G Pageau line and for the first several games at least, that line could make a dent on the score sheet.
Burrows’ departure opens up a roster spot for Reid Boucher and Alexandre Grenier to battle over. The Canucks will spend the final weeks of the season evaluating their prospects and this is their chance to make an impression.
