The Top 200 Prospect Forwards to own in fantasy hockey, July edition. The 2016 draftees make their debut!

Here are this month's top prospects to own in a points-only keeper league. Taking into account the organization depth chart, wait time, upside and NHL certainty. "Type" is measured by offensive/offense-small/power forward/two-way. Because every player in the Top 7 from last month was graduated this month, Toronto's William Nylander was able to take over top spot for the first time. Graduated players are listed at the bottom.

Kerby Rychel should be with TOR

    • Jeremy Campbell 2016-07-11 at 08:14

Should be, but we will see how he does in camp. He should be really motivated, hopefully he’s having a great offseason in the health dept.

      • Captain Obvious 2016-07-11 at 13:10

I think what he meant was that when this was released, Rychel was probably still listed as “CBJ”

  2. Jeremy Campbell 2016-07-11 at 08:13

Great to see lots of elite prospects in the Leafs organization, hopefully (another) Vesey joins the party in mid August!!

Just curious why this year’s #3 + 4 draft picks are ranked ahead of last year’s #3 + 4 draft picks? Last year everyone said it was a super deep draft, and now they’ve had an extra year to develop too.

    • Dobber 2016-07-11 at 22:56

That’s a great point. I don’t think Dubois would be ahead of them if he didn’t shock the world by going third.
But to me, if the 2015 and 2016 draft went at the same time and took place in January, with both classes available at once, then it would be in order:
      McDavid, Eichel, Matthews, Laine, Puljujarvi
      – and then a whole slow of 2015 guys because, as you said, that draft was DEEP

      • Chunky's Choice 2016-07-12 at 01:23

Ah I see, so ‘deep’ doesn’t necessarily mean each slot is better than the corresponding slot in a shallower draft. Even still, if marner/strome make the nhl this fall and dubois/puljujarvi don’t, then might we see them switch spots in your rankings in a few months? And then next summer might we see the 2017 #3 + 4 temporarily ranked higher than dubois and puljujarvi? I guess my overall point is just that the value of prospects are inflated a few months before and after their draft.

Can’t seem to find Chicago’s smallish Alex Debrincat? As a boom or bust prospect, hasn’t he done enough?!

    • Dobber 2016-07-25 at 08:49

He’s 274th. It’s Chicago. You’ll wait on him as long as you did with Hartman, McNeill, etc.

  5. lfchockey 2016-07-25 at 07:24

Surprised a guy like Rasmussen is so high. He has 4th liner written all over him IF he’s able to stick in the NHL.
Seems like outside of the 30 or so, the rankings haven’t had a lot of attention placed on them. i.e. Justin Bailey is now head and shoulders above Baptiste (yet, at the start of the season they were very close).
Heinen had a ridiculous second half of the year in Denver and was signed by Boston after his sophomore year.
Francis Perron dominated the Q this year and a cross-bar away from burying London in the Mem. Cup finals.
Cole Cassells seems too high after the year he had, and Frank Vatrano had an unprecedented year in the AHL.
    My 0.02

    • Dobber 2016-07-25 at 08:48

Rasmussen – I agree. But his 1% chance of moving up the roster is really no different then that highly-touted 19-year-old long shot everybody’s rushing to get. And with Rasmussen the wait time on finding out about him is 0, whereas that 19-year-old hogs a roster spot on your bench for five years before you find out the truth. 91 is not so high and under my +/- 5.0 rating spots rule, he could be considered 130th on this list. I’m fine with that.

Rankings are thoroughly considered at this time of year. The Prospects Report ensures that each prospect gets touched/adjusted. The Fantasy Guide ensures further tweaking. Rest assured, I look at these beyond the Top 30. I’m not sure I care to have a Bailey vs. Baptiste argument though since I won’t have either one on my list – and my league is 15 teams, 39 players per team. NOT ON MY LIST! lol

Heinen has moved up this list quickly. As you can see, two months ago he was 251. That’s from Prospects Report research (two months ago) that he shot up.

Perron has been rocketing up the list, but you’ll still have to wait on him, come on. Ottawa makes their guys wait, generally speaking. Lots of players dominated the Memorial Cup – Remember Chaput? Me neither. But he went from 393 to 215 to 166 this month, come on. He’s there, he’s 3 years away from the NHL. I’m happy with him there.

Cassels fall has been documented. Not fast enough for fantasy owners who love the knee-jerk movements (Perron had a great year, should be Top 10, Cassels a terrible year, should be 500th). It doesn’t work like that. Cassels is in an organization that needs forwards. The wait time on him with Vancouver will be minimal. One good productive month and they’ll call him up if there’s an injury – and just like that, his fortune changes. Big picture, my man. Big picture!

Vatrano – yes he did. That’s why he’s in the Top 80. Minimal upside for points though. He’ll be that 30-goal, 50-point guy. Jamie McGinn. There’s a place for him in deep points leagues, but not a prominent one.
