Top 300 Keeper League Skaters – October 2016

Dobber

2016-10-01

The Top 300 skaters to own in a fantasy hockey keeper league – October edition (to kick off the 16-17 NHL season)

This month includes injury adjustments, a couple of key prospects stepping up, and some further tweaking to the bottom end of the defensement (you'll see that impact more clearly in Sunday's Top 100 Defensemen list)

Rankings are for points-only keeper leagues, where positions do not matter. So defensemen get hit a little hard here, which is why I break them out in their own ranking. Also factor proneness to injury, style of team play, player's upside, player's 3YP (likely three-year peak average) and of course his projected points for the season ahead. Because as much as we like to set up our team long term, we can't lose focus on the year ahead!

For more on upsides (for all players), 3YP (for all players), projections that are so updated that they even have new projected Dallas line combinations after Mattias Janmark's injury (which was only announced yesterday!) – and all the latest cuts – check out Dobber's 11 annual Fantasy Hockey Guide HERE! I play in a 12 team league where each team keeps 5 players. I have first overall pick this year. According to these rankings Auston Matthews would be ranked as #10 on the list of available players in my league… However I have a hard time not taking Matthews at #1 considering his long term upside. What would you do if in my position? (My current 5 keepers below.)

    Alex Ovechkin
    John Tavares
    Anze Kopitar
    Tyler Johnson
    Tuukka Rask

Keeper league draft just occurred; we lacked bench spots, GM going to correct this, so still lots of value hanging out there. Anyhow, this was my draft. Yahoo says I suck, but according to your list I did OK :) https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/5bc8c7b669c870ee0e48e0ece97bf6b8d0dda4d6b9f445be4ab717d47be0202e.png

(in bold are still avail in my league)

The thing with Yahoo is that they go on their projections. So if everyone one of their projections come true, then you are last. But if you believe some players will outperform their Yahoo projections, then you’ll obviously be higher up the list.

Rick Nash vs Milan Lucic ?

    Who do I keep?

I already have McDavid, and I am lined up to draft Jesse Puljujarvi
so I am concerned about going too heavy with the e oilers.
    Thanks

Nash appears to still be on the decline and Lucic gets minutes with McDavid. Definitely go with Lucic. If you’re too concerned about going too heavy with the Oilers by drafting Puljujarvi, then draft another rookie close in ranking (assuming that you have to draft a rookie here).

Can someone please explain to me why on the top prospects list Puljujarvi is ranked ahead of Marner but not in this list? More NHL ready? Seems odd. Marner is too small.

    • Dobber 2016-10-12 at 19:03

This list factors in immediate dividends. My money is on Marner getting at least 6 more points this season.

That being said, in my intro note I stated that I won’t be arguing players within 5.0 rating points of each other, and these guys are 0.6 apart. So it’s like arguing porsche vs ferrari.
