Top 300 Keeper League Skaters – September 2016

Dobber

2016-09-01

The Top 300 skaters to own in fantasy hockey keeper leagues – September edition. Tweaking tweaking, always tweaking…

This month, as with every year, is the month with the fewest changes. Very few free agents signed or trades made since the August ranking. The few players who did join a new team have been adjusted, and there were several small tweaks based on feedback (i.e. I read your comments and take a second look at the player you mention). But otherwise, not a lot has changed.

As always, the rankings consider points this year, their 3YP (likelihood points when they peak), their upside, proneness to injury, how their depth chart looks now and in the future (who is ahead of them/who they play with/coaching style). These are for points-only, and of course – positions are not factored (i.e. a defenseman's offensive upside isn't as high as a forward's).

Note: +/- 5.0 rating points – consider them equal. Tomato/Tomatto – their respective owners probably rate the one they own higher.

You still have Vesey listed as a Sabre. Also, find it hard to believe his choosing the NYR doesn’t diminish (at least slightly) his value.

    • Dobber 2016-09-01 at 08:15

Sorry…I missed one (I hope only one?). You are correct, his value should have dipped a little. Next month, I guess. I had this nagging feeling that I was missing one key adjustment and I went over it and went over it and nothing popped out

  2. larrylintz 2016-09-01 at 08:33

Any chance you could toss out a guess as to where Karlsson would rank, especially vis a vis McDavid, in a one-year league taking into account position scarcity? (My league starts 5 fw, 2 d-men). I also have a thread/poll in the one-yr league forum trying to figure out which is most valuable in our format.

    • mage-users 2016-09-01 at 09:14

How scarce? I play in a 16 players points only with 7 forwards and 3 d-men. My top 5 is Crosby-McDavid-Kane-Benn and #5 Karlsson. I would be willing to swing for the fence and take McDavid first in points only league. So you can flip-flop Crosby and McDavid here.

  3. larrylintz 2016-09-01 at 09:43

Usually 16-18 teams in our league so 32 to 36 d-men starting vis 5x 16/18 forwards.
Crosby had only 3 more points than EK last year. I’m not saying it’s repeatable but EK was actually ahead of Sid for most of the year. If Crosby (or as better egs Pavelski, Gaudreau, Tarasenko, etc.) suddenly qualified for D wouldn’t poolies be tripping over themselves to grab them, arguably #1?
I don’t know, this is why I’m asking. Maybe someone better at math could crunch some numbers in a points-only one-year league on the relative worth of having a d-man who is a fantastic bet to get 75 or more, vs an elite point-a-game or slightly more forward.
The reason i single out McDavid is i think he’s the most likely candidate to break 100 this year. I don’t think Kane can repeat, and while i won’t rule out Sid, owning/watching him in the playoffs made me think those days are over. If i thought McD was going to be ppg and no more i’d take EK in a heartbeat due to position scarcity.

  4. Shane 2016-09-01 at 11:07

I am curious why Sam Bennett is so high on this list. He is stuck behind Monahan, plays 2nd line and 2nd pp unit? I see him comparable to Nylander or Hertl who are way lower on the list.

    • Dobber 2016-09-02 at 09:41

Yes, comparable to those two. Nice comparables there.

So – he’s more proven than Nylander and he’s less injury prone than Hertl. Does that count for something?

I am really wondering why Aaron Ekblad is ranked so low ? The guy is the angular stone of THE most ascending team in the East. He plays like a veteran and his shot pct is amazing for the last 2 seasons. Can someone explain ? I would be happy to discuss or receive comments. I have him in a keeper and wonder if I should let him go

    14 FW points only + 7 Defs Goals 2pts pass 1 pt. + 3 Goalies 2points W 3 pts Shootout.

    Aaron Ekblad
    John Carlson
    John Klingberg
    Roman Josi
    Andre Burakovsky
    Jakub Voracek
    Joe Thornton
    Jonathan Drouin
    Jordan Eberle
    Patrick Sharp
    Sidney Crosby
    Tyler Toffoli
    Wayne Simmonds
    Antti Niemi
    Jonathan Quick

Need to keep 10 in this already reduced list.

Have a good day all !

    • Dobber 2016-09-01 at 18:29

It’s points-only and for the foreseeable future I don’t really see him getting up over 47 or 48 points. But he can certainly change my mind in an awful hurry with a hot start. But he’s a keeper. You let go Sharp, Burakovsky and Niemi for sure. Last drops should probably be Simmonds and then your choice of Eberle or Drouin (faith in Drouin? Or not?)

  6. TONY FILIPPELLI 2016-09-01 at 19:01

Definitely a keeper this list is someone’s opinion that does not much about hockey, they have Teddy Purcell ahead of TJ Brodie a stud dman.

    • Dobber 2016-09-01 at 19:17

Definitely a comment that is someone’s opinion who does not know much about reading the introduction.

I first posted this monthly keeper list in November of 2001. Nobody has done it as long as i have. Welcome to the site, Tony

  7. THeunmistakable 2016-09-01 at 21:33

Torn. In a keeper league with three keepers and a goal heavy league. I got Forseberg, Gaudreau, and Perry. I got the first pick and trying to get younger from Perry. A) Do I go with Laine over Matthews with first pick? B) Slight chance to get both Laine and Matthews, but it is worth it to trade up and swap out those two for Perry and Forsberg?

  8. Alex 2016-09-02 at 09:07

Dobber, question for you. What am I missing on Duclair? Why is he ranked so low? I know he had a high SH% of 19% but if you look at the last 4 months – 45gms 25pts 14.9% SH% (high but much more reasonable). I think he showed more in this rookie season than many of the players much higher on the list, i.e. Anders Lee, Reilly Smith, Granlund, Yakupov, Namestnikov, Horvat. He played only 14.5min/gm and has a clear path as a top line winger.

    • Dobber 2016-09-02 at 09:40

Why don’t you give me a projection for him for each of the next three years and I’ll tell you if/where we see things differently

      • Alex 2016-09-02 at 19:30

I see him getting between 45 and 50pts this coming season followed by a progression to 60 over the following 2 seasons.

        • Dobber 2016-09-03 at 00:14

I’m with you there. Maybe not to 60, but it’s reasonable. He’s in that tight area of the rankings where slight tweaks make drastic bumps on the list because so many players get 40-50 points.
I have him for 41 points in the Fantasy Guide this year. Sophomore slump (mild), weaker lineup, opposition keys on him more, etc.
If I were to project him for 45 points, his rating would jump to about 51, and that puts him in the Top 140. Because one-year projection has a good impact on the list (immediacy is valuable in keepers, not only because it helps those who need it right away, but it also gives trade value).
Those four points are probably the biggest discrepancy we have.

I’ve been debating my final keeper (5 total), could use some advice!

    It’s a head-to-head 12-team Keeper league

    My Keepers are:

    T. Hall
    J. Klingberg
    J. Allen
    J. Huberdeau

Now do I keep Eberle or Voracek?

    Thanks!!

    • Matt Vandenbrand 2016-09-02 at 18:21

I’d keep Voracek. And personally I don’t think it’s close.

    • Dobber 2016-09-03 at 23:33

Voracek, though my bias for Oilers would have me think about it longer than I should

    • Scott McGruer 2016-10-07 at 01:48

I may reconsider this after seeing McDavid and Eberle together in the preseason.

  10. Scott McGruer 2016-09-04 at 00:19

Thanks for the list Dobber. I’m curious as to why Werenski is on this list at 385 when Provorov and Theodore are nowhere to be found. Popular opinions are suggesting that those two are on better teams and will produce much more than Werenski. Unless there is some criteria I am ignoring in the introduction, I am not sure why this is.

Second inquiry is about Eichel – I’m guessing you feel he is now way more comfortable playing at this level of hockey and will produce around 65-70 points? I get the feeling that the 15 guys below him will get more points this year, unless once again I am not taking a certain criterion into consideration.

  11. david 2016-09-06 at 11:52

wow, Hank Sedin out of the top 100. Know he’s dropping, but that much? Esp w Loui there, and they will be the only O options on the team..? Radulov 40 slots higher than Hank? Ill take that bet.
Also parise out of top 70? He will be much better w Bruce driving the O in Minny.

    • Dobber 2016-09-06 at 11:57

Hey David, thanks for the comment. I have a couple of quick thoughts
      1. Post your projection for this year for Hank and for Parise. I can tell you mine, and maybe we’ll see where the gap is. Keep in mind that whatever Hank gets this year, in two years it’s probably below 50 points.
      2. I wouldn’t keep Hank in my Keep-12 league. But I’m keeping Radulov. I’ll take the upside and the youth, thank you. And the downside won’t be that big a gap, barring injury (which is a risk for most players).
      3. Loui Eriksson, generally a 55-point player, isn’t going to help Henrik improve by much, let’s not get our hopes up too much!

      • david 2016-09-06 at 12:32

just curious as you had Hank just outside the top 20 earlier this year (Jan) ..he got 73 a couple years ago and 55 last year, so should be somewhere in there, maybe 60 pts? But understand that older guys slide down the rank. I always thought of him as comparable to Thornton, but Joe’s pts have been much better recent years. Do you think Minny will be significantly more offensive-minded this year?

        • Dobber 2016-09-06 at 23:33

I think Boudreau has shifted to a more defensive style, based on his last year with Washington and then how things went with Anaheim. So I’m thinking not

          • david 2016-09-07 at 08:43

as a longtime Parise owner, a long suffering Vanek owner, a EStaal owner who gave up, i am fed up with the O black hole that is Minny! ps just bought the guide (6th year i think), great stuff as ever, thanks!

  12. Prag 2016-09-15 at 12:41

Any way to get this broken out into position (LW, C, RW, D) ? Or add a column for positions?

    • Dobber 2016-09-15 at 13:33

Hey Prag, as the intro states – in this type of league, positions don’t matter. I do have a column indicating defensemen though, to make things easier to identify

  13. Joey Beliveau 2016-09-20 at 16:17

Why is Cam Atkinson ranked so high? I see names under him that I would take over him in my team. Any particular reasons?

    • Dobber 2016-09-20 at 16:39

I think very highly of him. Right or wrong. Call it a bias, but I like his upside, and his outlook for this year.

      • Joey Beliveau 2016-09-22 at 15:29

According to your ranking list and the players that were kept in my league and my salary cap space, that would be my list for 1st round pick: 1-Patrik Laine 2-Auston Matthews 3-Jesse Puljujarvi 4-Cam Atkinson 5-Tomas Tatar 6-Valeri Nichushkin (salary unknown)

        Does it make sense?

        Here are my 12 keepers:
        Crosby
        Tavares
        Drouin
        Teravainen
        Trocheck
        Spooner
        Bennet, Sam

        Karlsson
        Doughty
        Shattenkirk
        Deangelo

        Price

        • Dobber 2016-09-22 at 15:31

Yes, but not Nichushkin now because he’s out of the league for two years

          • Joey Beliveau 2016-09-22 at 15:41

So with my situation you would take Atkinson with 4th overall?

          • Dobber 2016-09-22 at 15:53

Are you asking if I would take him over one of the other ’16 draftees? I sure would

          • Dobber 2016-09-22 at 15:54

Oh wait, you can get Gostisbehere? That’s a no-brainer. Take him.
My rankings, as I say in the intro, do not take position into account.

          • Joey Beliveau 2016-09-22 at 19:16

Thanks! That’s what a I needed to hear!

          • Joey Beliveau 2016-09-22 at 22:33

what if the 3 first picks were Laine, Matthews and Gostisbehere.

            Would you go for Puljujarvi?

          • Dobber 2016-09-23 at 08:55

            Yes
