Dallas Stars Acquire Goaltender Scott Wedgewood

The Arizona Coyotes have traded Scott Wedgewood to the Dallas Stars for a conditional fourth-round draft pick. The condition being that the pick becomes a third if Dallas gets into the playoffs.

The Coyotes get: a fourth rounder for a guy they claimed off of waivers just four months ago! The 29-year-old Wedgewood was a career minor-leaguer pretty much, though he has proven time and again that he can be a capable backup. But he has been nothing but great for Arizona. Other than that December 28 game (seven goals allowed on 27 shots), his numbers have been akin to those of a starter.

Arizona is in talks with Karel Vejmelka on a multi-year contract extension. They also have the option of claiming one of two goaltenders on waivers (Harri Sateri, Toronto and Petr Mrazek, also Toronto).

The Stars get: A solid backup for Jake Oettinger. While Wedgewood will get an opportunity to seize that starting job because I think they go with the hot hand, Oettinger will inevitably win out.

Fantasy Players Impacted: Wedgewood, early on, will probably see the same amount of starts as before, which is every second game. But he is on a better team and should see better numbers. Oettinger will finally get some breaks, so his start frequency will drop. It will increase again about three or four weeks down the road I’m sure.

Vejmelka will see an uptick in starts, but because this is Arizona it will remain risky to play him. Overall, the organization’s faith in him makes his value stronger in the long term.
