Curtis McElhinney has signed a contract with Calgary. He will battle Brent Krahn for the backup role behind Kiprusoff. Also signing were Eric Nystrom and Tomi Maki, neither of whom will ever put big points on the board.

John Zeiler signed with Los Angeles. He has a shot at making the team as a fourth-line winger. In a few years he may become a 50-point player at best.

Winger Matt Murley has signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Coyotes. Murley belonged to the Avs last season, but never cracked the lineup. He is talented offensively and if he ever catches Gretzky's eye he may get a shot at a roster spot. Don't expect much though.

The Pens came to terms with Tim Brent, whom they acquired at the draft for Stephen Dixon. It's a two-way deal, so he'll likely be stuck in Wilkes-Barre. He is comparable to Maxim Talbot, so if the latter ever gets hurt, Brent will be recalled. The Pens also signed Alain Nasreddine.
