The Penguins of 2009?

29 March 2007: NHL Los Angeles Kings sign 20 year old rookie defenseman Jack Johnson to a multi-year contract. #33 Johnson played in his first NHL game tonight during a 4-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Johnson was the third overall selection in the 2005 NHL entry draft. Johnson seen here with Anze Kopitar during warmups infront of fans.

Long-time readers know that in the summer of 2005 I was strongly pushing all keeper league owners to scoop up as many Penguins as possible, because by 2007 it would be almost impossible to land one. Especially if your keeper league carries a second competition for the playoffs (as mine do).

Well, here we are in August of 2007 and acquiring Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin is a pipedream at this point. Landing a Ryan Whitney or a Marc-Andre Fleury is, while still possible, requiring a ton of assets in return. Two years ago you could have drafted them or had them for a song.

There is a new team to stick on your fantasy radar this summer and while the Los Angeles Kings are a Crosby and Malkin short, they still have the makings of an offensive dynasty.

Boston winger Stanislav Chistov has reportedly received a very lucrative offer from a team in Russia. It sounds like there is a good chance he will go back there this season. If we are to listen to an interview that Nik Lidstrom had with a Swedish newspaper, then we can feel secure in knowing that Nik [...]

The Islanders are reportedly interested in signing Jason Allison. Stay tuned for that one.  Apparently, one year ago David Vyborny signed a two-year contract and made it clear that it would be his last in the NHL, as he wanted to return to the Czech Republic so his son could know more about where he came [...]

Jakub Voracek has signed an entry-level contract with the Blue Jackets. I don't see him making the team this year, but next year looks promising. Reports out of Sweden are saying that Forsberg was back on the ice yesterday playing in a charity game in which he got two goals and three assists. The report is [...]

My prediction was correct, the Ducks decided to pass on Penner and take the picks. Penner is now an Oiler. He will be their first-line left winger, but I still don't see 60 from him this year...but he'll be a lot closer. The Rangers signed prospect Artem Anisimov to an entry level deal. The #64-ranked prospect [...]

New Jersey Devils and Nashville Predators

12 April 2007: Buffalo Sabres right wing Dainius Zubrus skates behind the net during game one of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals versus the New York Islanders at the HSBC Arena in Buffalo, NY. Sabres won, 4 - 1.

As keeper league pools increase in number each year, fantasy junkies become more active in the off-season as they prepare their team for the coming year. Rebuild? Retool? Tweak? Whatever your intentions, it helps to get all the information you can about your players.

Throughout the off-season, we will look at a pair of teams each week and give you the fantasy lowdown. Bucking the trend of past years, we will review alphabetically – in reverse. Just to be different.
