With the 2007-08 fantasy hockey season underway, I decided to focus two columns (players in the Eastern Conference and players in the Western Conference).

As dobberhockey readers, many of you already know a great deal about point potentials of various players, but for those of you in leagues that include non-standard scoring categories, these columns are right up your alley.

In this second column, let's take a look at some of the guys in the western conference.

How the Mighty are Falling

Brodeur

So you’ve been told not to panic (probably by me) about some big-name goaltenders that started off the season in a funk. But now it’s almost a month into the season and a handful of the elite goalies are making even the most confident fantasy hockey managers start to squirm.

'Special Agent' Peter Bondra has announced his retirement and he will manage the Slovakian National Team. I drafted Bondra in one of my keeper leagues before he entered the NHL and he was probably the player that I owned the longest - a good seven or eight years.  Carey Price will get the start tomorrow against [...]

Kovalchuk

Atlanta general manager Don Waddell made himself interim coach when he fired Bob Hartley after a 0-6-0 start to the season. Like all coaching changes, this one brought a whole new attitude to the roster. Lines were mixed around, players responded in different ways, and subsequently the fantasy value of some players has changed dramatically.

Ryane Clowe has a knee injury and has been placed on injured reserve. There is no given timetable for a return. Devin Setoguchi has been recalled - and bears watching.  Steve McCarthy, Pascal Dupuis and Brett Sterling were healthy scratches for Atlanta last night. Mcarthy and Dupuis were obvious... Sterling, was a little lesson. Nothing more. [...]

Want an easy win for your goaltenders? Try Chris Osgood for the time being, as Hasek's hip irritation will likely keep him out of the lineup for at least a week yet. The Red Wings have allowed just 26 shots in their last two games. That's TWO games. San Jose only had 11 shots on [...]

NHL Shift Charts For Each Game

By |2007-10-26T15:01:25-04:00October 26th, 2007|The Dobotomy|

Having a website dedicated to fantasy hockey that has grown to be quite large over the past year - well, that certainly has it's benefits.

NHL.com has decided - allegedly under the instruction of the NHL's Board of Governors - to remove their shift charts that were very helpful to poolies, and replace them with TOI charts, which lists the shift length and times, but requires tedious analysis to find out who played with whom. I started an email campaign to get them back, but to no avail. After all, bringing back the shift charts would be fan friendly - and the NHL can't have stuff like that...

Thanks to the resourceful people in the DobberHockey Forum , we have found a source for these charts once again. In fact, it's better than last year.

Statistically Speaking

I thought I’d start off this week with a quote from former British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics”.

You can bend and twist statistics to suit almost any argument.  With that in mind, let’s take a look at some interesting ones:
