Dobber Sports

2008-03-03

Angus here. Keep your head up for my Prime Cuts of the Year article, slated to hit DobberHockey sometime before March 25th. The Prime Cuts will comprise of 12 forwards, six defensemen, and two goaltenders.

Looking into bumping up the RAM even further – a tribute to the tremendous growth of the site. Hang in there, pages will load up faster, I'll make sure of it.

Correction: DobberHockey has taken notice of Trevor Smith. The Islanders took notice of him last April when they signed him. He'll be in the Top 200 prospects next update.

The Islanders have taken notice of undrafted prospect Trevor Smith. The 23-year-old former college star played his way out of the ECHL and onto Bridgeport, the Islanders’ AHL affiliate in December. After starting slowly and seeing little opportunity, Smith has 19 points in his last 19 contests. With this kind of play, he should be signed soon and is one to watch.

Nashville prospect Cal O’Reilly is a two-way center who is valued more for his defense than his offense. Try telling that to O’Reilly, who is third in American League scoring with 64 points in 62 games. The fact that the team already likes his defensive conscience tells me that the 21-year-old will be an NHLer one day. The fact that he has a scoring touch at the pro level indicates that he should be a 60-point NHL player before he turns 30, with an upside of 70 points or even more – depending on his opportunity. He should challenge for a roster spot in the fall.

Not only is Ryan Smyth suffering from a concussion, but he apparently has a serious shoulder injury that will be re-evaluated over the next couple of days.

Freddie Modin missed yesterday's game with a groin injury.

Rookie left wing Daniel Carcillo reinjured his knee in the Coyotes' 2-1 win over the St. Louis Blues on

Thursday night and will miss at least two weeks. He suffered an injury earlier in the season that kept him out of the lineup for about five weeks.

Ty Conklin was actually a healthy scratch yesterday, as Dany Sabourin was Fleury's backup. Unless I see different, I see Fleury and Conklin going 50-50 from here on in.

Radek Dvorak, out for a month with a broken hand, could be back on Tuesday for Florida.

Noah Welch could finally make his return to the lineup next weekend. He holds no fantasy value offensively this year.

Stephen Weiss returned to the Florida lineup after missing six games with a broken finger.

Florida backup Craig Anderson earned his shutout last night – 53 saves.

Mikko Koivu missed yesterday's contest with the flu.

Rick DiPietro missed yesterday's game to attend his grandmother's wake. He will return for the next game.

The Isles lost Frans Nielsen until the end of the month with a shoulder injury.

Atlanta defenseman Niclas Havelid only played 5:31 after leaving the game early with a hyper-extended elbow. He will have his elbow examined Monday when the team returns to Atlanta, although Waddell said he didn't think it was serious.

Peter Schaefer has been a healthy scratch for the last two games and will continue to be scratched as the Bs have won six in a row and are 7-0-1 in their last eight.

St.Louis has scratched David Perron for four of the last six games. Apparently, the kid flails his arms impatiently when he sets up a teammate and the teammate whiffs it. Not really something you do to Keith Tkachuk. This attitude should be of some concern, as it doesn't endear Perron to his mates and could affect the success of his career path down the road.

I don't know if you remember Len Barrie – a promising prospect who never panned out. Well apparently he made millions off the ice running a golf club in BC and is now in the mix to buy the Tampa Bay Lightning. Good story.
