 Whitney

The Pittsburgh Penguins have traded Ryan Whitney to the Anaheim Ducks for Chris Kunitz and Eric Tangradi.

The Penguins get: Ruslan Fedotenko Part II. Or maybe it's Pascal Dupuis Part III. Colby Armstrong Part IV. Andy Hilbert Part V? Whatever you want to call it, the bottom line is the team is now stuck with a bloated contract on the wing as opposed to on the blue line – even though that contract is smaller, it is just $275,000 smaller. Another 55-point winger, who may pop to 65 playing with Sid or Gino. No more no less.

If it weren't for the fact that Kunitz's contract has another three years on it, the Pens would have done great to add such a solid prospect in Tangradi. This hulking left winger is ranked 345 in the DobberHockey Fantasy Prospects List but rockets up into the top 150 with this deal. There is lots of room for him on this club. Now the Pens have two promising wingers for the future in he and Luca Caputi.

The Ducks get: A solid defenseman who is a lesser version of Chris Pronger, thereby making it even more likely that the team will shed one of Pronger or Niedermayer. Whitney will still be a 55-point defenseman in Anaheim, but you can kiss visions of 75 points from him goodbye. Only in Pittsburgh would you have seen that.

Fantasy Players Impacted: Wow, where to begin. Let's start in Anaheim. Whitney's value plummets from a top three keeper defenseman to a mere "top 15".  With Kunitz out of the way, Bobby Ryan will see more ice time and Andrew Ebbett can move out of that hotel room. Ryan Carter will see more action as well.

Kunitz's value obviously increases. Add 10 points to him. Perhaps even 20 if he really…really…clicks with one of the big boys. Whitney's departure could me that Alex Goligoski will return to the NHL. There is room now, although he was being scratched occasionally even when Gonchar was still hurt. Dupuis gets bumped down the depth chart. Ditto for Tyler Kennedy and Miroslav Satan.

DobberHockey.com will have the fantasy impact of every trade within minutes of it being announced on March 4 . It is a “must stop” for all fantasy owners who have their own trade deadlines to worry about.
