Oops. I swear I wrote the below note about headlines BEFORE I read the headline that Russ submitted. Honest!
Interesting that rookie Cal Clutterbuck's 317 hits are the most recorded in the brief NHL history that the stat has been tracked, according to Russo's Rants . Clutterbuck vs. Avery fight below.
Benoit Pouliot has 17 points in 21 AHL games – his best ppg average in the AHL. So he is improving. He was a late bloomer in junior as well.
Looking at the AHL leaders, although undeserving in some cases – every player in the top five is a career minor leaguer. Sure, they'll get their cups of coffee, or if there is NHL expansion they may even get a real break, but for the most part they are career minor leaguers (Keith Aucoin, Alexandre Giroux, Jason Krog, PA Parenteau and Darren Haydar). Ignoring that group, the leader is Janne Pesonen who has 73 points in 62 games. Could he earn the same label? He'll have one more training camp to earn an NHL spot. After Pesonen is Rangers' prospect Artem Anisimov, who has 71 in 72. He should make the Rangers in the fall and has more natural offensive talent than Dubinsky by far.
Proof positive that people only remember champions: a lot of people forget that Joe Thornton played two different playoff seasons with an injury that would have held him out of regular seasons games. To me, that excuses his poor production. Those who enter playoff pools underrate Big Joe, but eventually he will make them all forget that. Remember, there was a time when Steve Yzerman was thought of as a poor playoff performer – you laugh at the notion now. Had Thornton won a Cup, there would be no talk like this. That's why I'm not interested in second place in any league I'm in. I might as well be last. If nobody remembers you, then what's the point? Pick up my Playoff Draft List HERE .
Ryan Miller will return Friday for Buffalo. I've already dropped Budaj to make room for him in one league – I had to choose between Budaj, Gerber, Stoll and Oduya. I decided I needed the extra skaters, so a goalie went. Even though Gerber has been suspended for three games, I feel more comfortable with him over Budaj for the final two weeks (after next)
Marleau missed last night's game because his wife gave birth.
Some great insight for keeper leaguers in the latest Dobber Nation. Matt Bugg gives you some fantastic insight on up-and-comers, Portzline weighs in on the future of the Jackets and Wyshynski talks of the biggest deadline impact that surprised him. Why do, and I'm guilty of this too, sports media outlets feel the need to use a play on words to create nerdy headlines? I guess it would be kind of vanilla otherwise, but does it make you read the article? I know, I know, we had "Backes to the Future" a few days ago. But look at the first three headlines for TSN – "Marc of a Winner" (haha – Marc-Andre Fleury, get it?), "Storm Brewing" (Get it? It's about the Hurricanes?) "Sharks Tank in Chicago" (Because Sharks live in tanks in zoos, get it?)
Andrew Ebbett had three points last night. That gives him 15 in his last 17.
A huge new DobberHockey feature is going to be announced here within the next couple of weeks. Perhaps within a day or two, depending on progress. But call your trophy engraver now and make an appointment – you'll be putting your name on your league's trophy when you use this tool for a year.
Battle of the agitator: Pickering native (where I live) Sean Avery vs. former Oshawa (25 minutes away) General Cal Clutterbuck…
