Stralman Dealt to Calgary

The Leafs have traded Anton Stralman and Colin Stuart, plus a seventh rounder in 2012, to Calgary for Wayne Primeau and a second rounder in 2011.
Toronto gets: A second rounder and depth pivot.
Calgary gets: A very promising offensive rearguard.
Other notes: This deal makes a lot of sense for both parties. The Leafs had acquired Stuart as a throw-in from Atlanta and they managed to flip him. They had 10 NHL defenseman so the logjam needed to be freed up and acquiring a second rounder is a great return. But they couldn’t do this deal straight up thanks to the new cap era. So they give up $1.16 million and agree to take $1.4 million back. That almost makes it a straight assets for assets deal. The Leafs still, by my count, have nine NHL defensemen and 15 NHL forwards so there is more to come. That number should be eight and 13 by the time the puck drops.
Fantasy Players Impacted: The bottom line is – Calgary has room for Stralman on their roster. Their Top 4 are Jay Bouwmeester, Dion Phaneuf, Robyn Regehr and Cory Sarich. The next three are Mark Giordano, Adam Pardy and Stralman. He will have an opportunity to become a 30 or 35-point player this season on the strength of 90 seconds of PP time per game and second or third pairing regular time. Stralman owners rejoice.
