Nick Kypreos reports that Chris Drury is out for a month with a broken finger. And the door for Stepan swings open a little wider…

A comment on my Stepan note below suggests shades of Sergei Shirokov, in terms of preseason hype. It’s funny, because that very thought crossed my mind as I wrote it.

The Washington Post reports that Mathieu Perreaul is having a great camp so far and putting up some good offense with Eric Fehr and Jason Chimera on his line. Perhaps playing on the third line won’t be all that bad for him, if he fails to secure the second-line spot.

Roman Josi has a broken wrist – he will miss the next 4-6 weeks according to On the Forecheck. Terrible news for a young rearguard with high hopes for this year.

Could Mike Smith already be out of the running as the No.1 in Tampa? He left practice with an injured finger on his right hand, according to Lightning Strikes.

Buffalo rearguard MA Gragnani will miss the next month with a sprained knee.

So far in camp Alexander Frolov is clicking nicely with Marian Gaborik. The lucky pivot in between the two? Derek Stepan. The youngster is ranked 43 on my prospects rankings and I have him as a long shot to make the club. However, his development camp was very strong (playing with Evgeni Grachev and Ryan Bourque), and he doesn’t look out of place in the main camp.

As expected, Colin Wilson was moved to the wing for scrimmaging. The Preds have a lot of scoring-line centers, so moving one or two over would be best.

Nashville rearguard Roman Josi left scrimmage early and was later seen with a black brace on his left hand, according to the Tennessean.

Kris Russell will miss the next two to four weeks with a sprained knee, according to Puck Rakers.

Calgary’s second line consisted of Stajan with Bourque and Hagman during scrimmage.

Minor Leaguer Jason Jaffrey saw his camp come to end early. He’s trying out for the Ducks, but tore both his ACL and MCL. Sounds like he’s done for a long time.

The Ducks are trying Bobby Ryan at center on the second line, bumping Saku Koivu to the third line. Selanne and Blake are the wingers. Matt Beleskey is up on the top line, and as such warrants “dark horse” status.

Jiri Tlusty was back on the ice, but he was unable to take contact. He is recovering from a knee injury.

Here is a great look at Montreal’s Top 10 prospects by Habsworld.
