Last week, Brent Lemon did a column on Martin Brodeur, using some of the work found in the book "HockeyNomics" by Darcy Norman. The column created quite a buzz and there was a lot of interest in this book. The good people at OverTime Books are giving away one of these books per day from today until Friday. The first person who can create a thread in the forum in The Lounge called "Monday's Answer" and can tell me, using the Frozen Pool "Game Planner" tool, who has the most points by the Oilers when they have played the Senators over the last three years, will get a copy free. If you have won something from me this year, you are ineligible – sorry!

Marian Hossa collided with Nick Boynton in practice today according to Tim Sassone. He had to be helped off of the ice. No further word at this point.

Adrian Dater says – 3-4 weeks for Stewart

From TSN.ca: Green skated off the ice in apparent pain after blocking a shot with his leg in overtime. “Have you ever blocked a shot? It hurts,” Boudreau said. “He’s going to be fine, but they hurt.”

The Boston dressing room has been hit by the flu. So far David Krejci, Marco Sturm and Jordan Caron have fallen victim

Mattias Tedenby has been so impressive for the Devils that I don’t think he’s going back. Playing fewer than half the games for the team, he is still in their Top 10 in scoring and leads them in plus/minus among forwards. He is a year earlier than the Devils would have liked, but they are struggling so much that they have been forced to lean on him. He’s taken advantage of the opportunity. Look for a modest 35 to 40-point year from Tedenby as a rookie.

Pro-rate Kevin Shattenkirk’s 10 points in 12 games over 23 games – and he would be tied for the rookie lead in scoring with Jeff Skinner.

Fourteen of Milan Hejduk’s 26 points have happened with Chris Stewart on the ice. That crazy pace he has been on – look for it to slow dramatically.

Semyon Varlamov wins again. Much like how the situation will be in Philly when Leighton returns, the coach will go with the hot hand. Right now, that is Varlamov. Funny how certain that some emailers/ commenters were that Neuvirth is the clear-cut No.1. I found it difficult to suggest that it was still early, because I was convinced myself. But, once again we learn a lesson. No matter how great something is in November, it could be so much different by December.

Brayden Schenn’s AHL conditioning stint is over. He had seven points in seven games for Manchester.

Look for either Ryan Stoa or Mark Olver to get the call to replace Chris Stewart. This is a great opportunity for one of them, or perhaps Kevin Porter, to put some points on the board and make an impression. Brandon Yip is another option. Next game will be interesting to see how the lines shake out.

With his goal Sunday, Marcus Johansson now has four points in his last five games. His ice time still hovers around 13-14 minutes, but it’s a good sign of things to come. He has the potential to be an excellent second-line center in that 65-70 range.

Eric Staal has 18 points in his last 10 games. I guess it’s the “Big 5” now. (just kidding)

Joni Pitkanen has nine points in his last nine contests. He played nearly 32 minutes Sunday.

Ian White saw 25 minutes for the Hurricanes. He has three points in five games with his new team.

Sergei Samsonov has just one point in his last five contests, despite averaging about 20 minutes per game in that span. It was his strong production (eight points in seven games prior to the current funk) that made Patrick O’Sullivan expendable. Bah, had they waived Samsonov than it would be O’Sullivan who would be sucking. It was a no-win situation.

Mike Green was back in the Washington lineup and played 25 minutes. John Carlson also played 25 minutes, but Green took all his PP time.

Dustin Byfuglien…four points on Sunday. All 25 of his points have come in the last 21 games. It’s a torrid pace that can’t possibly continue, but all the same – it’s hard to see him fall short of 65 points this year.

This Atlanta team is something else, making stars out of second or third liners (Byfuglien, Andrew Ladd), and with Pavelec coming into his own (another win last night) it looks like they are the Avs of 2010-11. Not my first choice in the preseason, or anyone else’s – but I guess that’s why they term it “Surprise” team.

Speaking of Pavelec – that win was with 40 saves on 41 shots. Well earned.

Nathan Horton is pointless in five games now.

Dennis Seidenberg had a season high six shots on goal, but was a season low minus-3 against the Thrashers Sunday. I had expected a career season out of thim, but it’s looking as though he’s a 25 or 30-point defenseman and nothing more. This should have been the year where we start seeing some strides being made.

Nikita Filatov was a healthy scratch again for the Jackets.

Kari Lehtonen has played in all but three games this season and is on pace for 41 wins. I don’t believe that he has the durability for that and would be shopping him, myself. But kudos to those who drafted him late. This is a pretty nice return and he’s playing extremely well. He’s very talented, I just don’t trust the injury history.

According to Rich Hammond, Alexei Ponikarovsky could be back in the lineup in about a week. He has been out with a broken finger. Maybe, in their unending quest to put a winger on Kopitar’s line on the left side, he’ll get a shot there.

Joffrey Lupul scored the game winning goal for Syracuse Sunday. We could see him in Anaheim as early as the middle of this week, stay tuned…
