Did I not emphatically tell you that owning Peter Forsberg would hurt you more than help you?

Atlanta recalled Spencer Machacek from the AHL. He played just 6:12. In five games this season, he has yet to see 10 minutes in a game. He has 42 points in 49 AHL games, easily his best pro season and he’s second on the Wolves in plus/minus at plus-14.

Alexander Burmistrov has a cracked bone in his foot, so Machacek may be around for a little while.

The linemate du jour for Ovechkin and Backstrom: Mike Knuble. Yep, his name came up on Bruce Boudreau’s Wheel of Linemates.

Minnesota prospect Tyler Cuma tore his ACL and will be out for six months. It’s his third injury to his left knee. Boy the Wild sure know how to pick ’em, eh?

Jason Williams saw eight minutes for the Stars and had one shot on goal yesterday.

Did Jonas Hiller need that break or what? After playing 30 of 31 games, he finally missed three due to “fatigue”. I’d say. He returned and picked up a shutout. Granted, the team in front of him only allowed 12 shots through, but still…

Since being a healthy scratch, Anton Stralman has three points and is plus-6 in four games.

Although the Flyers were shut out, it was interesting to see their new lines they slapped together: Giroux with Richards and Carter, for one. Nik Zherdev was a healthy scratch again.

Jack Skille saw 19:37 of ice time in his second game for Florida. Clearly, they want to make a first liner out of him. So if he doesn’t put the damn puck in the net soon, his window will close. He needs to produce, and soon. If not, then watch his ice time start to dwindle until – boom – he’s back in the role that he seemed to be heading towards prior to the deal: an energy-line 20-goal scorer. This is his chance to show a glimmer of potential that he can be more than that.

In the last four contests, Drew Stafford has had three three-point games.

Tyler Ennis has 14 points in his last 11 games.

The Islanders have scored 28 goals in their last five games. Remarkable – so many of their players are shooting up the scoring race.

Michael Grabner is going insane. He has 11 points in those five games. He has 21 in his last 15. Of his 33 points, 24 of them are goals.

Ty Wishart has three points in three games for the Isles now. Nice debut. Between he and Travis Hamonic, the two offensive rearguards are sparking all this offense and at the same time making Andrew McDonald irrelevent in one-year leagues.

📢 advertisement:

Well…irrelevent is harsh. But the team has 28 goals in five games and in that span MacDonald has one point. He does have 21 PIM though, but that’s not a stat that he’s going to pad very often.

Hamonic has seven points in his last seven games and is a plus-2 in that span. He also has 29 PIM in his last two games and his shot totals are hovering close to three per game. Hamonic is just 20 years old, but obviously he fits into the NHL game just fine. He looks as though he can be a 50-plus point, 80-plus PIM defenseman. Next year look for 40/90 and then over a couple of years bump the points upward and the PIM downward.

Finally, Al Montoya gets in some action. Koskinen got the hook and Montoya came in, was shaky to start but settled down and shut the door, stealing the win. So I withdraw my statement on the situation in yesterday’s ramblings and stand behind my original proclamation that Montoya is a nice pickup.

Todd Bertuzzi is starting one of his hot runs. Four points in two games, a pair of goals in each.

Damn.

Alright fine, I’ll say it. Brett Sterling now has a point in each of his three games.

Andrew Ladd, why did both of your goals have to be unassisted. Don’t you hate that? I’m looking for Tobias Enstrom and I check out the two goals in the box score and – unassisted.

Vinny Prospal has three points in five games since his return and has 17 shots on goal – seems like a great pickup for that stat.

Taylor Pyatt has 14 points in 19 games.

Nashville has sent Matt Halischuk back to the AHL.

It’s Valentines Day so don’t forget to download a good app that will give you the scoring summaries of the game tonight while you’re stuck going out to dinner with your significant other. Just hold the smart phone under the table so you can sneak peeks.
