What’s in a name?

Vinny

In marketing, they call it brand recognition. You aren't going to the drug store to buy Kleenex, you're going to buy facial tissues. Your loving girlfriend isn't bringing you Tylenol to cure the beer-induced headache from last night, she's bringing you acetaminophen. The value these names hold are worth far more than the actual product is. The same can be applied to players in fantasy hockey.

Kris Russell suffered a fractured ankle in last night's game.   Mike Green could return to the Washington lineup tonight   Nashville prospect Taylor Beck has signed to play for Milwaukee of the AHL. Beck is ranked 93rd on my prospect rankings. Michael Latta has also signed. Latta is coming off a great season [...]

Ryan Callahan broke his ankle, per Bob McKenzie, blocking a Chara shot last night. His breakout season will remain a secret from a stats perspective   Some late-morning news - the Isles have shutdown Frans Nielsen for the season due to concussion symptoms. And Anaheim prospect Peter Holland will join the Syracuse Crunch of [...]

Fantasy managers must realize that the world of goaltending revolves due to the forces of cause and effect. What one goalie accomplishes over the course of a season plays a major role in the development path of another. With each NHL team averaging at least six goalies in their system, it is impossible to place every prospect in a perfect setting. For as I have explained before, when one goalie plays, another goalie is forced to sit and watch.

A fantastic read by Kirk Luedeke on my favorite prospect at the 2011 Draft - Ryan Murphy.   One simple trick to identify sleepers for next season - take a look at the points-per-game stat. Remove the top scorers, any injury prone players and stars who have had injuries (Crosby, for example).   Looking [...]

Late Blooming Brian Boyle

Boyle

Eight years ago, NHL GMs consulted with their scouts and chose from a talent in pool in what is now considered one of the deepest drafts of all time. One player chosen in that 2003 draft (26th overall) is often overlooked. Brian Boyle is taking longer than expected, but many forget that he was drafted just two spots behind Philadelphia’s Mike Richards and three spots behind Vancouver’s Ryan Kesler.

We're down to two suggested names for the DobberHockey columnist farm team - Black Aces or Hidden Gems. Voting ends at 5pm today. Currently, the Gems are winning. But for what it is worth - I voted for the Black Aces and that is where I'll throw my weight behind. Vote the Black Aces! [...]
