Goldie Says: To better evaluate Semyon Varlamov’s fantasy value for this season, please read Paving Varlamov’s Path. I go in-depth on the steps he and the Avs must take to eliminate his injury issues. Also, my info on Jordan Pearce in School of Block today is kinda a wash as Joey MacDonald agreed to a new two-year deal this morning. He was signed to be the #3 goalie this season, so expect Osgood or Conklin to still be signed by Detroit.
The Blackhawks have signed Viktor Stalberg to a two-year contract. At this point, I don't even see how he fits into the top three lines. He probably won't be given a fair chance to succeed and I predict they buy him out next year if they don't trade him. His cap hit of $875k is friendly for either option.
Think about it – assuming Toews, Bolland, Kruger and Mayers are the centermen (or Sharp), here are the wingers – Sharp (or Mayers), Kane, Hossa, Frolik, Carcillo, Brunette, Bickell, Stalberg, Olesz and Scott. Where does Stalberg rank? At best seventh, at worst ninth ahead of Scott. Seventh puts him on the fourth line.
Here is an update on the Steven Stamkos situation, including a description of Steve Yzerman laughing at the ridiculousness of him being traded.
Washington has added some underrated depth by signing free agent minor leaguer and former Leaf Christian Hanson.
Former Flyers goaltending prospect Nicola Riopel has been invited to the Islanders training camp.
The Top 300 player rankings did not have this year's draftees and for that I apologize. A new baby in May and a toddler smack-dab in the middle of Terrible Twos has made things a little tough, and adjustments are still being made. Things should be back to reliability in the fall (I hope). I'm just thrilled to get the Prospects List up on time! The August edition of the Top 300 will have the '11 draftees.
The Avs have added depth by signing Patrick Rissmiller.
Dallas has signed Jamie Benn's brother, defenseman Jordie, to a contract. He has been in the Dallas minor-league system, but was never drafted.
The Pens have come to terms with their No.3 goalie Brad Thiessen (one year contract).
Miss hockey? Here's a good fix. This MIN/CHI game from 18 months ago – significant because of the unlikely and surprise ending (they're down 5-1 heading into the third, which starts at the 3:12 mark)…
