Cal O’Reilly Heads to the Coyotes

O'Reilly

Fantasy Impact: The Coyotes went out and acquired center Cal O’Reilly from Nashville in exchange for a draft pick on Friday.

The Coyotes get: A talented playmaking center who has dominated with his vision and creativity at the AHL level.

Fantasy Players Impacted: O’Reilly immediately becomes one of the better offensive centers on the Coyotes. In Nashville he was buried behind Fisher, Legwand, and a few other comparable players. In Phoenix, he’ll slide in on line two or three. Ths may spell the end for Andy Miele with the Coyotes (at least for now), as he could be demoted to the AHL (although his good play has warranted sticking around for a while longer). Patrick O’Sullivan may end up being the odd man out, as well.

This move is also a huge “screw you” to Kyle Turris. The Coyotes acquired a similar player, showing Turris that his leverage is basically nill at this point. I don’t see the team trading him.

O’Reilly had 18 points in the first 26 games last season for the Predators – he’s proven in the past he can produce. His poor start to this season likely spelled the end of his tenure with the Preds, though. He’ll likely line up with Pyatt and Torres on the third line.
