Young Guns Lightning It Up

The Lightning have a number of young players building up their fantasy values in 2013.

With 41 points from rookies this season, the Tampa Bay Lightning rank second in rookie scoring. Take 23-year-old Calder Trophy candidate Cory Conacher and his 21 points out of the equation and the Lightning remain in the top 10, tied with Detroit at number nine.

Since Feb. 10, six rookie forwards have made their NHL debuts for Tampa, all getting the call from the American Hockey League’s number Syracuse Crunch. Averaging 45 points in the American League this season, these four Syracuse call-ups are a great display of the Lightening’s depth at the forward position, filling holes left by injuries to Vincent Lecalvier, Ryan Malone and Benoit Pouliot, all placed on the injury reserve earlier this month.

Jonathan Briggins looks at a top prospect for the 2013 Draft.

If you asked a casual hockey fan who the top rated players for the 2013 NHL entry draft are, chances are the most frequent answers would be Portland Winterhawks D-man Seth Jones and the Halifax Mooseheads forward duo of Nathan MacKinnon and Jonathan Drouin. Take a peak at International Scouting Services March rankings and you’ll see Russian forward Valeri Nichushkin at number two, his second month in a row that he has been directly behind Jones.

Marty Kwiaton gives his thoughts on some of Saturday's key matchups in the NHL.

After muffing the first two games on Saturday two weeks ago, the rest of the picks went my way to give us four winners the rest of the way, bringing me back up to 50% (finally). Anthony came back down to earth a little last week picking “only” four winners but was bang on in the Jets shootout victory over the Leafs. Let’s get right to it as the NHL continues to fill the schedule with early games on Saturday.

Bourque, Frattin, and more: Cheap NHL Labour (Part 2)

Gabriel Bourque USA Today

Eric Daoust looks at some players on cheap deals who can help your fantasy team out.

This week we continue a multi-part series that will cover many NHL players who are delivering good fantasy numbers at a bargain price in the shortened season. Obviously, the team that wins a league with a salary cap is the one that gets the best value out of every dollar allocated to its roster. This will include players who have a cost that is near the league minimum. Getting the most out of them can go a long way towards improving your chances of winning.

The focus will be put on players who have a cap hit under $1 million for at least this year and next year. Some have real potential to be scoring line players for years to come while others are shorter-term solutions that can still give your team a boost in the proper setting.
