Fantasy Impact: The Rangers have signed Dan Boyle to a two-year deal worth $9 million. The also signed defenseman Mike Kostka for one year at $650,000.
The Rangers get: one of the best puck-moving defensemen in the league…six years ago. Today, he’s just another aging Sergei Gonchar who will have to push hard just to get even 40 points. He does bring great experience to the mix.
In Kostka, the team gets a borderline roster player who is very underrated when it comes to moving the puck, but is also quite inconsistent. However, he could surprise with his numbers if the Rangers suffer a couple of injuries on the blue line.
Fantasy Players Impacted: I don’t think any team other than maybe Pittsburgh can help Boyle turn things around. His numbers are in decline or moving sideways at best. His presence will steal power-play time, but from who? Brad Richards is gone now, so Boyle just slides seamlessly into that PP spot.
Kostka’s value improves, thanks to the one-way deal and possibly some stability. But he needs to get on the roster on a regular basis. He’s still undraftable, but one to watch.
