T.J. Brennan Signs with Islanders

Fantasy Impact: The New York Islanders have signed offensive defenseman T.J. Brennan to a one-year, one-way contract worth $600,000.

The Islanders get: a 25-year-old who was the AHL’s defenseman of the year in 2013-14. Brennan is all offense and considered by many to be quite the defensive liability. The Islanders had someone like this before – Marc-Andre Bergeron, who was quite a prolific fantasy asset for about half a season.

Fantasy Players Impacted: I can see Brennan being a similar fantasy asset for a similar length of time. A hot start with maybe 20 or 25 points in 35 or 40 games, before hitting a wall and watching his ice time dwindle and disappear.

The Islanders have 10 defensemen, any seven of which could make this roster. So Brennan’s arrival decreases the odds of prospects such as Ryan Pulock and/or Griffin Reinhart making the team. It certainly doesn’t help them.
