In Jazdzewski’s debut, he gives you his best (cheap) picks for Saturday’s daily fantasy play
Hey guys this is my inaugural piece for Dobber Hockey, but I've been a reader on this site for as long as I can remember. I'll be providing daily fantasy hockey content for Saturday's games.
Today’s big Draft Kings contest boasts $5000 in prizes with the top 600 getting paid (and first prize is $500) – just $2 to compete. Deadline is Saturday at 7pm EST. Enter here!
Top Budget Plays
Goalies
Anton Khudobin $6,200 – The Coyotes are in the bottom third in the league in scoring and are equally as bad in 5 on 5 situations are the Canes are. They make the trip to Raleigh from Florida where they turned in a snoozing 2-1 loss to the Panthers. Arizona is winless on the road and has just one win since a 7-4 route of the Coyotes over two weeks ago. If Carolina can avoid the sin bin; where the Coytes are dangerous on the power-play they could be in line for their first win of the season. (Editor’s Note: per Goalie Post, Cam Ward is starting. But Anton Forsberg will start for Columbus as an alternative)
Damon Severson $3,400 – If McElhinny gets the start for Columbus, I like the Devils chances. New Jersey has shown some competence on the power-play so far this year clicking at 25%. Severson has been held scoreless for two games but this isn't a bad matchup for the Devils.
Jack Johnson $3,600 – Thankfully Draft Kings doesn't count plus/minus. With the injury to James Wisniewski, Johnson will collect his power-play minutes. These aren't the defensive Devils of years gone by. They are pretty porous giving up 3.3 goals per game. They also rank near the bottom of the league in PK percentage. Johnson has a great opportunity to earn some points for you.
Anton Stralman $3,800 – He has four points in three games and has been picking up where Victor Hedman left off. As long as Hedman is out of the lineup Stralman will give you the potential for a high return. I like the matchup at home against Washington, especially if the Bolts can pick up a few power-play opportunities.
Since we saved some money on the budget plays let's look at the few of the pricey options that are worth paying up for today.
Centers
Sidney Crosby $9,200 – The best player in the world with a home matchup against the Sabres? Fade at your own risk. I would be surprised if Crosby didn't tally two or more points in this one.
Steven Stamkos $8,800 – I always seem to tab Stamkos on the wrong days but the Bolts power play has been potent so far and the Caps PK hasn't been. With three points on Thursday, Stamkos has a chance for a multi-point game every time he touches the ice.
Claude Giroux $8,400 – He has six points in his last four games and Florida as you know is not very good. Although this game is on the road it shouldn't matter. The Flyers should be heavy favorites in this one and Giroux and company are primed for a big night.
Wingers
Zach Parise $7,400 – Might be a great option to pair with Granlund. He's a high volume shooter on a team that has generated a pile of shots to start the year. Dallas is not great on the backend making this a tremendous home matchup for Parise.
Jakub Voracek $7,200 – See Claude Giroux except make it eight points in the last four games. Voracek is an underrated talent with a prime matchup while riding a hot streak. What's not to like?
Patrick Hornqvist $7,000 – He's the wingman for Captain Canada and they are both staring a multi-point game in the face. Like Crosby, fade him at your own risk.
Defensemen
Brent Burns $6,400 – He has points in six straight games and now the Sharks welcome the Islanders to town. Although they haven't shown it this season the Sharks are always a tremendous home team. Burns mans a potent power-play
Kris Letang $5,400 – The Pens scored eight against the Devils. While an eight goal night isn't likely again, I'd be surprised if the Pens didn't score at least four. Letang and the Pens power-play is too good to pass up. He also gives you the added bonus of seven blocked shots in the last three games. So if the Sabres can actually gain the zone and put the puck toward the net, well there is a chance it's blocked by Letang.
Kevin Shattenkirk $5,200 – You could consider his price point mid-ranged but he is seeing a ton of time on the top power-play unit and has four points in his last four games. Add in ten shots to go along with his four points and he's a consistent producer on the blue line. The home matchup against Colorado is icing on the cake.
Goalies
Marc-Andre Fleury $9,400 – This might be the first and last time ever that MAF has been the highest priced goalie on the board. Coming off a shutout of the defending Stanley Cup Champions, then welcoming the lowly Sabres to town will do that.
Tuukka Rask $8,200 – A home game for the Bruins might not be as safe as it was last year, but these are still the Bruins and Rask is still world class. They will snap out of it at some point and show the Eastern Conference just how good they are. Rask at home is always a play worth considering.
Darcy Kuemper $7,600 – I really like Minnesota in this matchup because they are rock solid at home. The fact that Dallas will generate a good volume of shots will only make this play better. The Minnesota netminder should bring home the win and add a bunch of points for the saves.
