The players with the most to be thankful for in fantasy hockey – down to two. Both are Penguins.

As this calendar year comes to an end, we're also approaching the conclusion of the Cage Match tournament to crown the NHL player who should be most thankful for his current fantasy situation. Although there were fewer total votes cast this round, all were sincerely appreciated and they've given us the finalists who'll do battle this week in one last epic match!

This Week's FINAL MATCH

As I said above, it's Penguin vs. Penguin in our final, pitting Patric Hornqvist against Marc-Andre Fleury. Will Fleury's longer history of fantasy good fortune be enough to have him prevail against Hornqvist, who went from the (formerly?) woeful offensive confines of Nashville to the dreamland of the Penguin top six? A strong case could be made to choose either player, and I hope all of you will give this a lot of thought before casting your vote.

Other factors to consider in predicting the voting is whether Fleury will be hurt by the fact that some of you are in non-goalie leagues, whereas Hornqvist is owned in each and every league no matter how shallow if might be. And perhaps Fleury's elevated play so far this season will cost him votes, as might occur with Hornqvist due to his December slump.

We'll know the outcome and answers to these questions soon enough; but until then, this could well end up being a battle that's decided by just a handful of votes (or fewer), so be sure to cast yours!

Bonus Content Coming

In addition to talking about the outcome of the final match and wrapping up the tournament, in my next column I'm going to do what I did after my last Cage Match tournament and –again with a stick tap to my fellow columnist Tom Collins – provide a list of the ten players who have the least fortunate fantasy situation, so start thinking of who you'd put on the list so you can be prepared to read me the riot act if I miss anyone who was deserving of being named. After that, it's back to regular Cage Matches, so be sure to leave me comments about who you might want to see battle each other in the new year.

Keeping Karlsson Short Shifts – Thanks for Vejmelkmories

Elizabeth and Lewis reunite to bring you all the latest fantasy news and strategy, such as how our siblings would fare if called on to fill our roles like Owen Sillinger did for bro Cole. Then it’s onto news including coverage of the postponed CGY/LAK game and defensive injuries piling up in MIN and putting some strain on Gustavsson’s performance. Injuries and outjuries include a pair of goalies returning to their teams in Ingram and Shesterkin, as well as how Monahan’s wrist injury opens the door for big minutes for Fantilli. Finally, the pair touch on Voronkov and PLD’s hot streaks, and discuss John Carlson’s rollercoaster in light of Chychrun’s production.

Keeping Karlsson: Tuch Hunch

On this edition of the Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey Podcast mega-show, Elan and Brian tour every team, ranking a slate of the least bad goalies, noticing the wind in some Red Wings’ and Stars’ sails, dangling snoozer status above a pair of commonly rostered power-play quarterbacks, and rushing or strolling, accordingly, to some skaters on the up and up.
