Thoughts on Huberdeau, Roy, Sekera, Stalock and more…
***
Andrej Sekera has seen a big uptick in power-play time over the last dozen games or so and JM Liles has missed most of those games. The result has seen Sekera pick up the odd point. Well now that Liles has been placed on IR, you can expect Sekera to snag four or five points in the next six or seven games. Mark it! I’m not sure if that means he’ll do enough to keep the job when Liles returns, but hopefully the coach snaps out of it. Am I right Sekera owners? Eh? Eh?
The Hurricanes called up Ryan Murphy to replace Liles and he’ll see his share of PP time as well, but I don’t think it will take from Sekera. Murphy has 17 points in 23 games for Charlotte this season, and 39 points in his last 45 AHL games. So he seems to have the AHL figured out. He’s actually tied for the team lead there.

So is Joey Hishon taking it as a slap in the face that the likes of Borna Rendulic keeps getting called up before him? Just a thought that crossed my mind. Hishon hasn’t exactly earned a recall, but then again Rendulic hasn’t either. Lake Erie forwards have been sucking in general. Offensively the defensemen have been doing alright – Stefan Elliott has 19 points in 30 games and Maxim Noreau has 20 in 30.

Cam Atkinson was placed on IR yesterday by Columbus, He is out until at least January 3 and perhaps as late as January 10.

Puck Daddy went over their Top 10 hockey fights of the year. You can get the full list here. But the top fight was from way back in January when Antoine Roussel squared off against Kevin Klein:

Some Ducks news for you – Dany Heatley cleared waivers (shocker!) and Corey Perry is getting close. Perry could even get back into the lineup as early as tonight.

Well the NHL ruined it. Just like all major North American corporations, they took a good thing that was successful and they implemented Operation Overkill. Winter Classic? Just realized now that it was set for Thursday. Yes, that means it has as much hype that I pay attention to as any other Thursday game. Zzzzz. Thanks for creating 50 outdoor games per season NHL. Now instead of something special, it’s just one of a bunch of games that are too uncomfortable to see live and torture to see on TV with the shitty lighting and camera angles. Money talks.

Speaking of sponsorship…(kidding!)
So I got one of these new NHL belts from Mission Belt on Christmas Eve. Very cool, great quality. I went with, ahem, the Leafs (and black). I was impressed with the quality and how sharp it looks. No holes is their unique gimmick – but it works great. Anyway, $54.95 and $1 from each purchase goes toward helping global poverty by “giving a hand up, not a hand out”. Here is a picture:
You can order yours here. It’s worth taking a look. I was reading through some of the customer comments over there and a lot of people swear by them. Like I said – I’m impressed by the quality.

Magnus Paajarvi also cleared waivers and has been sent to the minors. And so ends the NHL career of another much-hyped prospect.
*
Tampa has recalled Vasilevskiy. They did this because Ben Bishop is dealing with a nagging injury and “may” miss tonight’s contest. FYI.
*
I can’t believe Nick Foligno is hanging in there (31 points?). That is all.
*
Jonathan Huberdeau seems to have crossed that barrier that had been stopping him from putting up points. With an assist on the only Florida goal, he has four points in four games and 14 in his last 20. I’m going to predict right now that he’ll finish second on the team in scoring this year, and ballpark it at…45 points.
Disclaimer: this may not match what it will say in the Midseason Guide because I haven’t started second-half analysis and projections yet. But it’s a gut call.
Nick Bjugstad signed a six-year extension worth over $24.5 million. A good young potential star and that cap hit is going to look pretty sweet in two years.
*
Points in three straight for Lars Eller, who tends to get into streaks like this and get all of our hopes up. But he was way underachieving so this market correction was due.
*
So Mark Arcobello arrives and what does Olli Jokinen do? He looks over his shoulder, that’s what. Two points for Jokinen last night. It took him 35 games to get his first two points. As soon as his job is in jeopardy, he manages two more right away. Go figure.
Great return for Brian Elliott with 44 saves on 47 shots. It was a loss though. Brodeur was in the press box. They’ll keep him around to cover off any future injuries and if there aren’t any – I’m sure they’ll squeeze him in for a couple more starts. But for all intents and purposes, Brodeur is pretty much done.
