Top Budget Plays

Centers

Mikael Backlund $3,200 – I had a tough time deciding of I should write about Backlund here or about Jori Lehtera. But I've written about Lehtera before and I am pretty sure he's already on most of your radars for budget plays, so I'll go with Backlund. The Flames Swedish center returned to action on the 7th at home against the Red Wings. He is slotted right now on the Flames 2nd line with Paul Byron and Curtis Glencross, certainly not an all-star supporting cast but that's where he is. Since returning from injury he has two goals and two assists in two games to go along with seven shots on net. Assuming the Canucks will focus a bit more on the Gaudreau-Monahan-Hudler line, this should leave some easier matchups for Backlund. I like his chances to score again tonight.

Centers

John Tavares $7,900 – I almost never suggest taking skaters who are playing back to back games, especially on the road. So you do have those things working against you, but Tavares is coming off of a three point effort and the Jackets just got hammered by the Leafs last night.Columbus is among the worst teams in the league in goal suppression at home. Tavares will look to capitalize on that as he already has 23 points in 23 road games this season. He has three multi-point games in his last four and he will either be facing a starting goalie playing back to back or Curtis McElhinny. Either way it's a good situation to be in.

Wingers

Alex Ovechkin $9,200 – Ovechkin has 20 points in 18 home games and Vegas has this as the highest scoring game of the night. The Caps are averaging over three goals a game at home and Detroit is giving up 2.72 goals per game on the road. The Wings are not a terrible team on the road at 9-9 this season, but Ovie is one of the better scorers in the league at home and he's riding a five game goal streak including three multi-point games. You could probably make a case for someone like Alexander Steen or T.J. Oshie here too, with how hot they've been, but I didn't want to litter the picks with Blues only.

Defensemen

Kevin Shattenkirk $6,800 – Shattenkirk is tied for the league lead for points among defensemen with Erik Karlsson at 36.Carolina is giving up 2.95 goals per game on the road; meanwhile the Blues are scoring 3.53 goals per game at home.Shattenkirk has 18 points in 19 home games to date and has seven in his last four. 23 of his 36 points have come on the Blues top rated power-play. If Carolina gets themselves into some penalty trouble expect the Blues to cash in.

Goalie

Brian Elliott -$8,300 – There are four more goalies on the board with prices higher than Elliott but he is the clear cut #1 choice tonight. The Blues are welcoming the Carolina Hurricanes to St. Louis. The Blues are 14-5 at home while the Hurricanes are just 4-18 while scoring only 1.82 goals per game. Elliott and the Blues have won three straight games and he's 6-2 overall at home with just a 1.63 GAA.
