BREAKING: Huge news from out of Calgary. Mark Giordano is out until August. Surgery for a torn biceps tendon.

Some minor deals here worth noting:

Colorado trades Max Talbot to Boston for Jordan Caron

Anaheim trades Mat Clark to Colorado for Michael Sgarbossa

Toronto trades Korbinian Holzer to Anaheim for Eric Brewer and a fifth rounder.

Cam Atkinson signed a contract extension with Columbus, three years gradually escalating to 4.5 million in the third year. This kind of payday indicates that he will continue to be given scoring-line ice time and will be allowed to develop into at least getting the chance at his upside (rather than the team giving up on him).

Toronto trades Olli Jokinen to the Blues for a late draft pick and Joakim Lindstrom.

Buffalo trades Torrey Mitchell to the Habs

Pittsburgh re-acquires Ben Lovejoy, sending Simon Despres to Anaheim

Analysis on the Bartschi trade forthcoming..

The Wild trade Justin Falk and a fifth to Columbus for Jordan Leopold.

Buffalo trades goalie David Leggio to Arizona

The Penguins traded Robert Bortuzzo to St. Louis for Ian Cole. Just a swap of depth defensemen.

The Blues acquired Zbynek Michalek from the Coyotes. Michalek’s arrival could fee up Jay Bouwmeester a little, so you may see a slight uptick in production from JayBo. But still nothing to write home about. Prospect Maxim Letunov goes to Arizona in this deal and he’s the fantasy player of interest in this swap.

Waiver news: the Arizona Coyotes claimed winger Tye McGinn off waivers from San Jose. He offers some grit and hustle from the third line. The ‘Yotes also claimed winger Craig Cunningham from Boston. He’s a smaller forward with some offensive upside, but likely not enough to crack an NHL team’s second line. Even if that NHL team is Arizona.

Welcome to Deadline Day and be sure to check back throughout the day for my breakdown of each trade from a fantasy standpoint.

Will there be many trades left? Sunday was the busiest Trade Deadline-Eve that I can remember. Ever. And the past four days leading up to Deadline Day is also probably the busiest I can recall. I think there will still be some movement.

Chris Stewart is certain to go. Martin Erat, Marek Zidlicky…and to the Sharks pack it in and trade Antti Niemi? And of course, Jeff Petry. And I didn’t even get to the Maple Leafs – will they do anything? I think it’s boom or bust there. Either they wait until the summer for the firesale, or they go nuts today.

I mentioned several weeks ago that I had stockpiled six players in my one keeper league on non-playoff teams with the idea that they would be traded to playoff teams. I had fallen out of the regular season race in that league, but have put together the best playoff team by a wide margin. Except for these six players. Let’s check in on them and see how I did:

Drew Stafford – Check. Off to Winnipeg. I already had Frolik and Wheeler. And while it’s nice to have several players on the same team for the playoffs, I was obviously hoping for a move to the Ducks or Blackhawks or some place that could do some damage.

Cody Franson – Check. Off to Nashville. Man was I ever hoping for Detroit. He’s now my only Nashville guy, so kind of a waste. But he should maintain a 50-point pace with this team.

Jiri Tlusty – Check. Another Winnipeg guy! Not thrilled. Not upset. Indifferent. Again, good to stockpile guys on one playoff team. I’m now loaded with WPG, NYR, NYI, and PIT. Still hoping for more Western Conference help.

Andrej Sekera – Check. Off to the Kings! Too bad he’s my only one from that team. But can’t hurt, I guess.

Tomas Fleischmann – Check. Now we’re talking. I have Kesler, who was all by his lonesome from the Ducks on my team and now he has the Flash there. I expect Flash to start off on the big line and get about 10 games there and maybe four or five points. Then he’ll start to get bounced around the lineup, like the other wingers. But there’s always that hope, that prayer, that your guy really hits it off on an All-Star line. Hey, if Dustin Penner can put up points there last year, Flash can do it this year.

Keith Yandle – Cha-ching! As you can see from my trade breakdown, I love this fit for him. And he joins several Rangers that I already own, fitting my playoff team perfectly.
