Top Budget Plays

Centers

Scott Laughton $3,000 – Value is always found in unexpected places on a large Saturday slate. Whether you are playing the all day or just night schedule of games, Laughton is up against a Winnipeg team where he can mostly avoid facing the Dustin Byfuglien pairing. That should mean quite a few chances considering when Philadelphia and Winnipeg get together, the goals can come in bunches. Laughton is also playing around 15 minutes a night now.

Wingers

Curtis Lazar $2,500 – Yes Mark Stone will be back from suspension but Lazar is such a good target to snag anyway. He can generate shots on goal and has the ability to block shots. The reality is it would not take much for him to hit a solid price per point metric anyway so if worse comes to worse, why not take a shot. In his limited two game audition, he showed he could be a pretty solid two way player while eating up 16-18 minutes. That should count for something.

Defensemen

Colin Miller $2,800 – Miller has gone on a bit of a hot run of late with points piling up in the last four or five games. More importantly he has begun to see several shifts on the power play and even a couple with the top power play unit. That means lots of chances given how good Boston’s man advantage has been. Miller’s ice time is creeping up into the 18-19 minute a night range which is great for fantasy owners.

Goalie

Linus Ullmark $6,100 – At this point it may be worth it to ride the hot hand with the goalie who has managed to win a few of his starts with Buffalo while looking a bit shaky at times. That being said, his overall bottom line numbers have been good which is all anyone cares about in daily fantasy. Vancouver coming all the way East may be a bit easier to stomach than most people think and the Sabres have been scoring some goals in support of the youngster.

Since we saved some money on the budget plays let’s look at the few of the pricey options that are worth paying up for today.

Centers

Nicklas Backstrom $6,600– It is an easy kind of night here as Washington vs. Toronto may be the chic matchup to roll with. Backstrom will draw a fairly easy assignment and though the Maple Leafs can possess the puck, it does not take long for a team like the Capitals to strike against subpar goaltending. It is not like they are playing against Henrik Lundqvist or a goalie of that caliber. Toronto’s defense and goaltending are a reason why they are where they are no matter how they are sheltered. Backstrom is a center that can exploit that.

Wingers

Alex Ovechkin $9,400 – This is another Saturday where you just have to play Ovechkin and let him do his thing. Yes, there are better options perhaps but this one is the best out of the high priced selections. Remember this is about forming the best stacks and the “TKO” line is probably a good target here. Ovechkin may be an even more intriguing cash play because of his history against the Leafs.

Defensemen

Dustin Byfuglien $6,400 – Oh Byfuglien is just a beast on skates and that is something everyone knows. The thing is this year he is hitting people all over creation but this is also creating some offense for him as well. Playing against a Philadelphia team that can spark his offensive and physical sides at the same time may prove to be very beneficial for DFS owners. This is more a GPP play given the game but some may try to go in the cash direction.  

Goalie

Carey Price $9,300 – Keep an eye on status reports but if Price cannot go then take Jonathan Quick from the Los Angeles Kings. The reason we give this double barrel option is that the Kings game starts at 4pm ET and the Canadiens game starts at 7pm ET. Price has an incredible record of late against Boston and seemed to stymie them at most every turn. Quick has had a rather good start and faces a Florida team struggling to score many goals (two or less in five straight games). These are the best from your higher priced options on a busy Saturday night.
