Penguins Acquire Trevor Daley

Fantasy Impact: The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired defenseman Trevor Daley from Chicago for Rob Scuderi.

The Penguins get: a defensive defenseman with underrated offensive skills, particularly his booming shot from the point. Daley really came into his own last season when Dallas started leaning on him a lot for the power play. Up until then, he had always been relied upon for penalty killing and as more of a spare part on the PP. However, after he was traded to Chicago he had difficulty getting any kind of offensive role and saw very little power-play time. Check out his stat comparables here.

The Blackhawks get: a defensive defenseman with zero offensive skills. But this really works for the 'Hawks because Daley didn't fit as a third-pairing guy. Whereas Scuderi is tailor-made for it. The Penguins also retain one-third of Scuderi's salary, so Chicago frees up $1 million in cap space.

Fantasy Players Impacted: The Penguins are trying to escape this offensive funk they were in. Adding offensive depth from the blue line will help in that area. And while Kris Letang is out, Daley can step in on the power play and help out with his booming shot. He had six goals and 12 points on the power play last season. Since it's looking like another one of those (injury-filled) years for Letang, Daley could be leaned on more than expected. When Letang is healthy, Daley will be pushed back to the second unit and probably produce at the same rate he was producing at in Chicago. Which is to say – not much.

Olli Maatta takes a small hit here, but don't be alarmed. He's far too talented to let this act as a big drag on his numbers. It will hurt, but we're talking instead of 30- to 35 points he'll get 28- to 33.
