And no Mike Green?
I’ll look when I get home. He should be here
Hanifin gets zero love on this site.
Rightfully so. Points only. What’s his upside? Maybe 45? In 3 years? Pass
I get that but how can you have guys like Pysyk, Matheson (who’s older and hasn’t proven as much with Hanifin scoring the same rate at BU as him while several years younger), Nesterov, or Reinhart over him when their production isn’t really any better than Hanifin but Hanifin has shown much higher upside??
He doesn’t have to be the next Ekblad to get recognition. There’s at least 10 other players on that list who I’d take him over so while he shouldn’t be top 60 or anything, it’s a little weird that you haven’t even ranked him in the top 100.
He was getting solid PP1 time too, which I always set as a prerequisite for my keeper Dmen (even on an admittedly bad team still nice to see). Lot of guys low on the list would need blackmail pictures of their coach to get those minutes.
I don’t like this list, of all my lists – I just pull it from my Top 300. Not an excuse, just an explanation, but I would prefer this list just be the Top 50 because after that I don’t like it. I don’t like how the formula treats the lower guys, or the prospect defensemen, or the players on weaker teams. I think going forward I’ll just post the Top 50, rather than embarrass myself. You’re absolutely right with this comment.
To explain my formula, which is quite faulty once we get down beyond the Top 50 or so defensement (i.e. the Top 400 players overall)…Hanifin’s shitty team penalizes him a couple of rating points…and when his points are already low, then “a couple” hurts him too much. And on the opposite end, the Oilers I feel will be high-flying offense, so that helps Reinhart a couple of rating points. And since he only had a couple to begin with, this added “couple” really helps him. Too much.
It’s flawed, and I shouldn’t present the Top 100 like this until I fix it.
Thanks for clarifying that by the way. For what it’s worth these are still extremely good rankings that I look forward to viewing each month. The top 50 is definitely much more accurate and anyone making a top 100 is going to run into a lot of issues with forgetting guys so I definitely respect you for doing so. Hell I’d even say your rankings are pretty good up to top 75 or so.
Hanifin is just one guy who slipped through the cracks but it shouldn’t take away from the fact that your rankings are still really good and that ranking this many players is extremely hard to do. Thank you for the time you put in each month to do these!
Thanks!
If Hanifin gets “dinged” for being on Carolina, then how does Ryan Murphy make the list? Hanifin is already a better player than Murphy probably will ever be and he certainly has “golden boy” status within the organization (while Murphy is 4 years older and still a part-time Charlotte Checker).
No idea. Like I said – the list is deeply flawed beyond the Top 50 and I’ll probably just go with a Top 50 going forward.
I’m surprised not to see Hutton break into the list – he was 3rd in NHL D in IPP http://stats.hockeyanalysis.com/ratings.php?disp=1&db=201516&sit=5v5&pos=defense&minutes=1000&teamid=0&type=individual&sort=IPP&sortdir=DESC
Slavin has to be relatively close too after his great rookie season
Umm Ryan Murray? I know you’ve said that this list is off after the top 50 which is reasonable to say but this guys needs to be on this list.
In this case…I think there are 100 defensemen I would prefer over Murray! LOL (ahem – Band-Aid, no upside, etc)
Zero Vancouver Defenceman on here? Seems like a mistake… I’d have Edler and Hutton on here over a lot of the bottom 30 listed here.
