Rambling about prospects going back into the draft; Releasing the Prospects Report and more…
***
Released at approximately *updated* 4pm EST Wednesday – the 10th annual DobberHockey Fantasy Prospects Report (buy it here). Yes, it’s already been 10 years since I first decided to launch this. I needed a good document that breaks down all the prospects from a fantasy hockey standpoint. I thought it would be very helpful to me and others like me. How many others were like me? I had no idea. But ten years ago I decided that I would put in the hours, along with my prospects writer (long-time readers might remember my former prospects writer Matt Bugg) and make the document available for sale. I’d even package it up with my Fantasy Guide, which had already been successful the previous year. Well, the response for this was overwhelming. It turns out that there are thousands like me. Thousands of keeper leagues and all of them had owners that were hungry for my perspective on each and every fantasy-worthy prospect. And the rest is history…

As I was doing the FPR write-up, going over the college signees for a few ‘bonus’ profiles to add at the last minute, I noticed that St. Cloud State University had a pretty good year. I don’t think anyone on the team was drafted, but NHL teams sure scooped a bunch of them up in a hurry when their season ended. Kalle Kossila signed with Anaheim after picking up 54 points in 41 games to lead the team. Patrick Russell signed with the Oilers, defenseman Ethan Prow signed with Pittsburgh and goalie Charlie Lindgren signed with the Habs. Wow – from zero players belonging to NHL teams to four with NHL contracts in the span of a month.

Expect a decision on the NHL’s participation in the 2018 Olympics to be made later this year. It’s looking doubtful though. There is a new IOC president who is apparently against giving professional athletes the same subsidies as they had in the past – such as the costs of travel, accommodations and part of insurance. I know the majority of you love the Olympic hockey even at the cost of pausing your fantasy leagues for a couple of weeks. Myself, I hate putting my league on pause for anything, even if I do enjoy the hockey. So my feelings are mixed.

Mark Arcobello has done my favorite things for this type of player – he signed to play in the Swiss League. No more bouncing back and forth from the AHL to the NHL and paying high taxes. Off to live the good life!
Start at 2:20 to see his first 20 AHL goals this year (and ignore the horrible music):
Yep. It’s the offseason. So you’re getting Mark Arcobello highlights. You’re gonna watch it and you’re gonna like it.

June 1st is the deadline for signing the 2014 North American draft picks. The Sharks were unable to come to terms with Dylan Sadowy and it’s interesting to see that the Red Wings paid a third rounder for him. Interesting because that’s the round he was drafted in. Usually when I see a deal like this, especially when the team’s back is against the wall, the acquiring team pays below market value. It tells me that Detroit really values him. They quickly signed him to his ELC on the weekend. Some buzz around the Internet is that some teams would have considered drafting him in the first round if he went back into the draft. So kudos to the Wings for getting value.

Here is a list of prospects who were drafted in 2014 who need to sign today by noon or they re-enter the draft:
Conner Bleackley – drafted by Colorado, traded to Arizona in the Mikkel Boedker deal. Don’t worry about this one, Bleackley has been horrible. Arizona acquired him so they could get the compensatory second-round draft pick.
Warren Foegele – Because he left the NCAA, Carolina may have another year to sign him. I’m guessing that’s the case because he’s too good to let go.
Alexander Peters – Dallas. A big player who plays tough. But still, the Stars were hoping for more than 16 points in 63 OHL games since drafting him.
Keegan Iverson – NYR. Move along, nothing to see here.
Nick Magyar – COL. Declining production year after year in the OHL. You almost never see that from a drafted player. I thought I was reading his stats page the wrong direction at first.
Josh Wesley – CAR. A defensive defenseman who is worth signing. Plus he’s Glen’s son, and I’m sure Carolina owes ol’ Glen a favor or two.
Nelson Nogier – WPG.
JJ Piccinich – TOR. He had 66 points in 66 games for the mighty London Knights and then posted three points in four games during the Memorial Cup.
Ryan Mantha – NYR. No relation to Anthony, but he is related to an NHL’s Mantha: he’s Moe’s nephew.
Julien Pelletier – CBJ. With 27 goals in 60 games he’s worth at least considering. Maybe the Jackets are turned off by his minus-22 rating.
Alexis Pepin – COL. He’s 6-, 218 pounds and tallied 47 points in 62 QMJHL games
Brent Moran – DAL. A 6-4 goalie, but he’s coming off a terrible year. Dallas clearly rolled the dice on him, drafting him for his height, but he hasn’t come around in two years since.
Alec Dillon – LAK. A 6-5 goalie. Teams are doing this a lot lately. If the kid is 18 and he’s already 6-4 or taller, then it doesn’t matter if he’s 3-25-4 with a 0.750 SV%. They’ll still draft you and hope that you get better over the next couple of years. If not, then they won’t sign you. Fifth round or later you should watch for this.
Aaron Haydon – DAL. At this point on the list we’re in the sixth round of the 2014 draft.
Aaron Irving – NSH
Reid Duke – MIN. This one is a done deal. Minnesota has no plans to sign him, per Mike Russo. I doubt he gets re-drafted.
Cristiano DiGiacinto – TBL
Chandler Yakimowicz – STL
Jaden Lindo – PIT
Keven Bouchard – EDM
Kyle Jenkins – CAR
Patrick Sanvido – DAL
Olivier Leblanc – CBJ
Jacob Middleton – LAK

How are you doing in your playoff pools? My rundown:
Dobbernomics – I’m in the Top 35. But the Top 10 is out of range I think…
The DHP (my 15-year league) – I have a decent team and everything is going my way in terms of the right teams winning. But my guys aren’t doing what they should. Crosby should have another 10 points, for example. If my players were doing what they should, I’d be right on top. Instead, I’ll be fourth or possibly third.
The MHP (my 27-year league) – I’m winning by one point. I have Malkin and Hornqvist. He has Thornton, Pavelski, Burns and Letang. So I’m toast. I won it last year, and usually the 117 points that I have this year is enough to win a playoff pool. But no such luck…

Dobbernomics I’m 31. Would be top 20-15 if I didn’t make some completely awful goalie choices early on (didn’t get a goalie START until the 2nd round). Also held onto to Klingberg too long. Top like 8 in team value though.
You guys definitely deserve praise on many days when the ramblings are awesome but I gotta say, this is some pretty weak stuff today. Too busy finishing up the prospects report to produce a quality ramblings? It’s not quite the offseason yet…
Thank goodness for the prospect ramblings. It’s your name on the website but Harling totally schooled ya today
Thanks goodness. So Harling had 16-hour Ramblings and 1-hour on the Prospects Report. I was the opposite
Ah, don’t let this patzer get under your skin, Dobber. This is one of the most important days of the year for us fantasy geeks. Spending your time as it should be spent, let Chunky dig up some news if he wants to bitch.
Or write it himself if it’s so desperately needed.
I love it when people slam free content. Also, zero NHL games were played last night. What do you think they should write about?
haha thanks. I get this every summer. Cup Final is two weeks of no news other than unsigned prospects. Late August is another dead zone. I still managed 1200 words here and spent time digging up all the unsigned draftees…but I can’t win
Way too busy, buddy. Yesterday I worked for 16 hours on it and I have a stiff neck. I only carved aside about 90 minutes for these Ramblings – and 60 of them were just looking around the Internet for news and ideas. Nothing happening.
The offseason actually has MORE happening than the final round of the Cup Final. And you know it.
Wow. Tough crowd…
Your opinion holds no weight here whatsoever. Just so you know.
Is that so? You really think dobber doesn’t put any weight on the opinions of his loyal readers? Just so you know. Come on.
I’m sure does. But probably not yours. Honestly, what kind of person complains about FREE fantasy hockey content online that’s called “ramblings”? And you want to offer constructive criticism? How idiotic. Where’s your fantasy site? Obviously you have a good one, right?
You do realize that most of the internet is free right? Why should any website bother writing good quality material? Because clicks = ad revenue and good quality material brings more clicks. Dobber knows this and does indeed care what his readers think.
Yes– he does care, but he can probably tell that you’re an idiot– hence, doesn’t care what you think. Also, you clearly don’t know how ad revenue works, but it’s cute to watch you pretend. Troll on my friend, troll on.
Hmm, I guess that’s why his responses above were so friendly then.
Ah jeez, apparently this post came across as way more negative than I meant it to. I love this website and the ramblings are great like 364 days of the year. Apparently this is the one day where they suck but no biggie!! Dobber if yr neck is sore and you’re working 16 hour days, maybe just ask Harling or someone else to write the ramblings? You deserve a night off after a long day like that. There IS content out there as proven by the prospect ramblings this very same day. Sorry to be such a downer, im just trying to offer constructive feedback (though I maybe didn’t phrase it too constructively last night)
It is remarkable that your attempt to be less negative was even more arrogant, obnoxious, ungrateful and rude. You have no idea how exhausting it is for a writer to come up with something coherent and valuable every day. No idea.
I humbly disagree about the tone of my comment, and very much do have an idea of what that is like, that’s why I’m saying he should delegate the task to another writer instead of killing himself working 17.5 hour days with a sore neck!
It’s all good, don’t worry. I should have farmed it out, but I like to give 24 hours notice to a writer, or at least 12. And it didn’t look like I was as behind on the FPR as I was, until it was 8 or 9 at night. I already had a few notes jotted down anyway so I thought I could do it.
But I thought digging up the unsigned prospects was a great idea to gather them into one place and leave a few comments. So I didn’t think the Ramblings were so bad
I can’t believe it when I people slamming the quality of the ramblings…The Cup finals is only 1 game every other day to write about involving 2 teams. The regular season has 30 teams to write about. The AHL playoffs are down to 2 teams! The Memorial Cup is over. Hell even the Gagarin Cup in the KHL is over and CSKA Moscow won that league. So what is left to write about? Not a helluva lot. The other day I paid $29.99 USD for the Ultimate Fantasy Pack and I am always impressed when those reports get released…but I don’t pay for any daily ramblings on this web site or on Dobber Prospects for that info and ramblings that I read also. It is free content and rather than make up a bunch of nothing the writers spend time that we don’t finding topics to write about. If you have nothing nice to say than say nothing instead of sputtering bullshit out of your mouth.
Funny that people are slaming today’s rambling.
I mean, yeah today’s isn’t the best ones but man they have been awesome lately. Neil Parker , Ian Gooding and Mike Clifford have been killing it.
I’m guessing taxes in Switzerland couldn’t possibly be lower than taxes in the US.
7 playoff pools. 3 box pools, 2 pick any players you want 1 15 players the other 20 few positional variables, & 2 draft pools. Will finish 1st in 5 & 2nd in 2. Needed to StL to get by SJ to win the other 2. 1 of the box pools & 1 of the draft pools.
I don’t like the NHL shutting down for the Olympics nor the All-Star shame. I do like Olympic hockey though so I guess that makes me mixed as well. Hate the impact these stoppages wreak with my fantasy leagues I participate in & run.
I’m as keen on hockey pools as anyone but when the Olympics happen my “true fan of the game” nature takes over, and i couldn’t care less about a stupid little gambling league involving some buddies betting on millionaire athletes, when weighed against the best players in the world representing their country and putting it all on the line, it’s no contest.
Request: A cage match analysis of Karlsson and Burns. Reason being, i’m in an auction league and Karlsson will be drafted before Burns because we go in order of how they finished in scoring. If $100 (out of a $200 budget for 10 players) is a reasonable price for Karlsson, how much should one pay for Burns. Was 75 a bit of a fluke for burns (82 definitely wasn’t for karlsson) or are these guys that close?
