Carolina Acquires Teravainen From Chicago For Cap Space

Fantasy Impact: Carolina has acquired young winger Teuvo Teravainen from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for cap relief. The exact deal – Teravainen and Bryan Bickell to the Hurricanes for a second-round pick this summer (50th overall) and a third-round pick in 2017.
The Hurricanes get: a potential star in Teravainen and a big and strong (though soft) forward in Bickell. The latter winger is 6-4, 223 pounds and he has potential to be a contributing member of the Hurricanes. He did, after all, tally 17 points in 23 playoff games back in 2013. He has been better at using his body to throw the big hits as his hits/game has been rising steadily since his big new contract. But his penalty minutes are negligible for such a big man. Speaking of contract, Bickell's cap hit is $4 million for one more season – and that's the reason the Hurricanes were able to land a stud like Teravainen. The 'Canes could buy out Bickell's contract or they could give him a shot as a contributing member of their roster. They have a lot more room for him than Chicago did and would thus be more patient with his production slumps.
The centerpiece is of course Teravainen. Here is a 21-year-old talent who I would have no problem betting good money on his topping 45 points this season. No problem at all, wouldn't hesitate. In fact, he's so good that he's probably now the best forward on Carolina's roster and no, I didn't forget Jeff Skinner (though Elias Lindholm could potentially have a say in this). Teravainen's 5on5 SV% was just 5.5% last season, indicating a big market correction upwards on his 35 points. The low number is due to his playing primarily with Tommy Stonehands (Andrew Desjardins) and Jimmy Noscore (Philip Danault). Carolina will give him the best linemates they have to offer. I would not be surprised if Teravainen led Carolina in scoring in 2016-17 and wound up being the only player on the team to reach 60 points if he stays healthy.
The Blackhawks get: Two draft picks where they have a reasonable shot at replacing Teravainen (though it would be three years before they see that kind of return, if they do). But more importantly they get much-needed cap space. Now they can re-sign Andrew Shaw, seen as a key component to their squad.
Fantasy Players Impacted: The loss of a key winger (Teravainen) and a fringe winger (Bickell) means two (or perhaps one-and-a-half) spots open up. This will likely be filled by prospect Ryan Hartman, though Tyler Motte may see more opportunities as well. And since neither prospect is ready for a top-nine spot right away, you may see Richard Panik getting more prominent ice time. Although Teravainen saw 40.4% of his ES shifts with Desjardins and Danault (who is now with Montreal), he did see 30.1% with Marian Hossa and Jonathan Toews. Panik getting even a sniff of that kind of time with those two would be a huge boon.
In Carolina, Bickell goes from being a minor-leaguer to an NHLer (unless he is bought out). If the Hurricanes keep him, he'll be used in the top six and could potentially reach 40 points. However, he does get injured a lot and his lengthy slumps could see him end up in the press box – but that's still an upgrade to his Chicago situation. It's Teravainen who really benefits. He's talented enough to get more playing time on the second line in Chicago and he would have improved on his career best 35 points from last season. But with Carolina he'll be one of their key guys. Possible 'the' key guy. And even going conservative I think you can pad an additional 10 points onto what he would have had with the Hawks. Of course, his presence in the top six pushes the likes of Andrej Nestrasil and Brock McGinn down the depth chart, and it may make it more difficult for hotshot prospect Sebastian Aho to make the team.
