Fantasy Impact: Steven Stamkos has elected to remain with the Tampa Bay Lightning for another eight years, re-signing with the team.
The Lightning get: to keep their superstar forward. Stamkos had no shortage of suitors – 30 of them, if it wasn't for the cap. But even with the cap he still had a good 10 teams very interested.
Dobber's Take: At a reported eight years and $8.5 million per season, the Lighting actually may have gotten a deal here. However, it's still not a good idea to do this. There are far too many great young players in need of a contract this year or next, and far too many great young prospects ready for NHL duty. Now a couple of those players won't get that contract, they'll be moved. And now a prospect or two will never get his shot. Put it like this – would you rather have Nikita Kucherov and Tyler Johnson …or Steven Stamkos? It may come down to this next year.
I don't like it from Tampa's perspective, but Stamkos himself made a smart signing. He gets the extra year, he gets the favorable tax situation and he gets the beautiful weather.
Fantasy Players Impacted: Well, since he didn't go anywhere, the only player this impacts is Steven Stamkos. And the fantasy impact is not favorable. At least in a new city we can imagine the possibilities. But with the Lightning we already know: Under Jon Cooper without Martin St. Louis, Stamkos has 153 in 179 games (70-point pace). Prior to that, with St. Louis, he had 363 in 311 (96-point pace). He's a 70-point player with tremendous upside but also some risk (blood clots that we are assured will not return but still…)

I beg to differ Dobber. I believe Stammer made the right decision as hockey player and for the fantasy owner. All ‘players’ should be in a win now place and that’s where he is. Toronto fans are just going to have to suck it up and hope A. Matthews turns into a decent NHL centre because prospects are just that…prospects! Stamkos has a win now mentality and he should after a few health issues. TB gives him that. Toronto would have been a win now maybe in five years, maybe….

I agree with Mr. Ross. This is a great win for Stamkos, Yzerman, and the Bolts… Stamkos stays with the team that gives him the best chance to win the Cup (signing a deal that — considering FLA’s favorble tax laws – is really only a minor hometown discount). Tampa re-signs arguably the best goal scorer in the league at a price that will allow the team to more-or-less “keep the band together” for several more runs at the Cup. I say trade Ben Bishop, use the cap space to get Kucherov resigned and ride your young talent for another half-decade of deep playoff runs.
I agreed with Ross too. Big with for Stamkos.
Yzerman will suffer for this though in the long run – forced to trade two of Kucherov, Bishop or Johnson. Ouch! All for a 70-point player
I thought maybe this helps Vasielvskiy… cuz they rush a Bishop trade in order to help with the cap??
This was a complete coup by Yzerman. The fact that Hedman got the same term is amazing. He just locked up his two best players on a cap strapped team for almost a decade. Kucherov will get re-signed before the start of the season, johnson and palat have a year to show what they got. Bishop will be gone, Ohlund gone, filpulla could be traded, seems like Steve Y made all the right decisions if you ask me. Not sure how you could think he will regret this after the way he handled Drouin and Stamkos this year.
It was such a great contract that Yzerman had no choice but to get it done. No question.
That being said, don’t kid yourself – Stamkos is not his second best player after Hedman. Kucherov is better, and when healthy I think Johnson is also better. And he could lose one of them because he did this contract (that yes, he had to do because it was so good)
