Top 100 Keeper League Defensemen – August 2016

Dobber

2016-08-04

The Top 100 defensemen to own in points-only keeper leagues. August edition. Karlsson reigns supreme…

This month, all of my projections for the 11th annual Fantasy Guide were uploaded into these rankings. So this is my annual 'audit' of the rankings, in that sense. In keeper leagues, you have to balance the long-term value of players with immediate playoff. These are pulled directly from the overall Top 300 list (find that here)

To take a look at the Fantasy Guide and what is included – click here.

As always, the rankings consider points this year, their 3YP (likelihood points when they peak), their upside, proneness to injury, how their depth chart looks now and in the future (who is ahead of them/who they play with/coaching style). These are for points-only.

Note: +/- 5.0 rating points – consider them equal. Tomato/Tomatto – their respective owners probably rate the one they own higher.

No Streit? Is he really behind guys like Wiercioch and even Del Zotto?

    • Dobber 2016-08-04 at 09:30

Ha! This is why I cut the list off at the Top 60 the last few months. It starts to suck as we move down the list beyond that.
      True answer!
I may need to cut it back down again. The list is really just pulled from the main list of 750 players in the regular ranking. In this case, Streit’s penalty for being in his late 30s hurts his ranking badly.
But really, what is Streit – a 35-point player this year, and then retired? So perhaps the list isn’t so off after all…I think I just convinced myself

I think that this version of the list, which is you annual “audit” cleanup should stay at 100. Here’s why:

        1. If you cut it off at 60 or so, you will get lots of questions about the prospects and guys who just missed and what you think about them. This way, it’s a bit more clear, as one has a long rated list.

        2. It gives people more to digest in the slower months, and people can think more about making different kinds of moves in the offseason.

          Thanks Steve! Makes sense.

Yeah, I like the list at 100, I freaked out a bit when I looked last and it was cut down?!? LOL. Thanks Dobber

Is Streit really finished or did he just lose his role to the Ghost? He’s only a year removed from a 49-point season.

        • Dobber 2016-08-05 at 00:08

You’re probably right, as a one-shot deal, but in points leagues even 32 points is pretty useless. So that return to form better be legit (35+)
I think Streit would have one more year on another team, but on this one I think with Ghost and MDZ and Provorov Streit gets Brian Campbelled

No love for Vancouver? I realize they stink but someone’s got to run their PP. Maybe Edler moves into the top 100 once camps start and some of the high-potential prospects get cut.

    • Dobber 2016-08-04 at 12:31

Yeah…after around 75 or 80, the values of these dmen between 80th and 150th are pretty similar, and depend entirely on your needs (immediate 32-point help, or a longshot potential stud prospect). I’d be fine with Edler at 80 and I’m fine with Edler at 137.

To answer your question though – no. No love for Vancouver at all. In fact, they get the least Dobber love of all the 31 teams. I even love Las Vegas’ current roster more than Vancouver’s ;)

I would remove Kronwall from the list, he is done

    • Dobber 2016-08-04 at 12:31

      Stick a fork in him!

Some poolies still value him though

    • isle b. 2016-08-04 at 17:26

Ouch. He still had 26 points in 64 injury-riddled games last year.

Just a question, how come Shea Theodore is ranked higher than Derrick Pouliot in the Top 50 Fantasy Prospect Defensemen list, but it’s the other way around in this list? I own both but can probably only keep one, which would you choose?

    • Dobber 2016-08-05 at 07:25

Great question. It’s about his situation and competition (depth chart). That’s factored more in the regular ranking. Prospect ranking does use it, but not as much

      • Chunky's Choice 2016-08-05 at 22:39

Hmm so if I’m reading that correctly you prefer Pouliot for the next couple years but Theodore after that? Unless the Ducks trade another D-man of course.
