Senators Acquire Condon

Fantasy Impact: The Ottawa Senators acquire Mike Condon from the Pittsburgh Penguins for a fifth round pick in 2017.

The Senators get: A cheap backup to fill in for the injured Andrew Hammond.

The Penguins get: A lottery ticket of a draft choice, but added capital matters, especially when you consider that they A) got Condon for free and B) were no longer in use of him with Matt Murray returning to the lineup.

Fantasy Players Impacted: Condon gets a bump to his value as he joins a team in need of a backup. This is also a signal that the injured Hammond is nowhere close to returning. Hammond is dealing with a groin issue, which can derail a season.

This acquisition is also a setback and a bit of a slight on prospects Matt O’Connor and Chris Driedger. Both have performed well in limited action in the AHL this season but clearly the team feels they are better allowing them to play in the minors than to sit back and watch the Craig Anderson show. This doesn’t have to be a damning criticism of these prospects either. The Senators may just prefer to have them continue to develop than to sit.

This is also a signal that the Senators are prepared to ride Anderson as far as he can take them. This is a positive if you’re in a league that values goaltender volume. With the zone Anderson is in, the more he plays the better. Of course, if they wear him out this could end poorly. It’s not as though Anderson has been immune to injuries of his own.

Might also mean that Anderson will probably take some time off for his wife.

Saw he was taking leave with no timetable for return, so Condon is the new #1.
