Top 200 Fantasy Prospect Forwards – March 2017

Dobber

2017-03-16

Here are the Top 200 prospect forwards to own in fantasy hockey – March edition

This month I did a full and thorough audit, as I do every four or five months. The list takes into account upside, likelihood, wait time, team depth, and organizational status. "Type" is offense, two-way, offensive/small, power forward. This month's graduates can be found at the bottom…

Don't forget: plus or minus 5.0 rating points are considered equal value and at that point becomes a matter of need, mood, or opinion.

What’s the criteria for graduation? It appears to be subjective or arbitrary.

    • Dobber 2017-03-16 at 09:21

Yeah pretty much. If you want something official, it’s “when Dobber becomes 100% confident that he’s not going to be returned to the minors – not 99.9%, 100%” And it doesn’t hurt to leave them there for another month if I’m only 99.99999%

      • Striker 2017-03-16 at 10:53

Sorry I like standards. My favorite is the Hockey News Future watch. The rate all players under 21 or the Hockey Writers who either grade pure prospects or teams players 25 & under. No perfect standard but you have to have something. Ha-ha!

As always love the data & insight juts far more structured.

        • Dobber 2017-03-16 at 11:20

I’m the opposite. Structure ruins it. All rules need to be flexible. Been doing this for 10 years and I”m really happy with it.
          Appreciate the kind words

          • Striker 2017-03-16 at 12:45

I live by the 80/20 rule. It applies to almost everything in life. 80% follows a norm or pattern, the other 20% anything can happen.

I’m 30+ years in. Started my 1st draft pool league in 1980-81, spun off our 1st H2H fantasy league in 91. No internet then, ran thru the Province; published stats in Tuesdays addition, & processed all stats manually with excel. We have 2 owners still participating that were their in 1980, the majority of the remainder mid to late 90’s.

          • Dobber 2017-03-16 at 12:51

That’s great. 27 years for me in my one keeper. Began when I was 15. Pen and paper every Tuesday. Read everything I could get my hands on.
Been doing the prospects list publicly for 10 years. Been living by the 100/0 rule – 100% what I want to do and 0% what others want me to do ;) haha

          • Striker 2017-03-16 at 13:21

You do good work. I checked in periodically going back about 7 years. Started reading the ramblings religiously 3 maybe 4 years ago just started weighing in over the last year maybe 2.

          • Dobber 2017-03-16 at 14:38

Thanks! Wish you chimed in earlier, it’s been great

          • Striker 2017-03-16 at 16:27

A couple of total hockey dweebs. I have been for as long as I can remember now. Late teens. It’s not a hockey pool, fantasy league, box pool what have you, it’s a hobby that has kind of manifested into numerous business opportunities. 1 that returns a significant return.

  2. chimp82x 2017-03-16 at 11:01

I hate seeing Vesey above Connor, even if it’s essentially a wash. Yes, still bitter about last year’s Hobey snub. FWIW, Connor has 30P in his last 30 AHL games so a call-up should be coming. Not sure where he slots in though.

That should bump him past that bum Vesey….

  3. seb 2017-03-16 at 16:40

Hey Dobber can you give some perspective on the rating? What would an 80 rating be considered as? Love your stuff!

    • Dobber 2017-03-17 at 11:36

Just a result of my calculation. The three at 79 or 80 here:
Guentzel is 95% certain of being an NHLer with an 80-point ceiling, zero wait time, and holds good value on the regular fantasy list.
Mantha is 90%, 77-point ceiling, zero wait time, holds great value on the regular list because he has so many points already.
Strome is 90% certain, 90-point ceiling, but two years wait time (or one more season, that is) and has good value on the regular fantasy list (similar to Guentzel).
The regular fantasy list factors in 3YP, depth chart and injury proneness as well as the other stuff.

On the regular list next month, Keller and Guentzel will move up, which will cause their numbers on this list to move up next month.

      • seb 2017-03-18 at 12:50

Hey thanks a lot and not just for the response but the heads up on Guentzel he has been a fantastic pick up
