The Top 50 prospect defensemen to own in fantasy hockey, March edition.

This month I did a full and thorough audit, as I do every four or five months. The list takes into account upside, likelihood, wait time, team depth, and organizational status. This month's graduates can be found at the bottom…

You can check out the Top 200 prospect forwards (posted yesterday) right here. As always, ratings within plus or minus 5.0 are considered equal value and at that point would depend on your needs, your mood, and your 'gut'.

I don’t really understand why this site remains so high on Matheson. He seems like a candidate to be a solid player but never really post the kind of point totals that make a defenceman a difference maker for fantasy. Aren’t guys like Pulock and DeAngelo much more likely to become fantasy relevant?

    • Dobber 2017-03-17 at 08:21

He’ll be good. Last year at the Worlds he led Canada D in scoring. This year as a 30-pt guy with no PP time is impressive.
DeAngelo a wild card, but is rated equal on this list – remember that +/-5.0 rating points are considered equal value. Pulock too. Equal

Thanks for your comment. The reminder on the +/- 5 thing is helpful so I don’t read too much into it. He’s not getting 30 points this year though, he’s at 15 pts thru 68 games. Maybe next year.

You’re right, I hadn’t checked in on him in a month or two, his pace has fallen off. I’m still not worried

Curious about when Adam Fox will get recognized

    • Dobber 2017-03-17 at 11:30

      He’s on the cusp – I have him 58th, 3.5 years away

Out of curiosity, where would you rank Dante Fabbro if he was owned by a team that actually needs a defenseman? Being a Predators, he stands at the end of a pretty long waiting line, but say we put that aside…

    • Dobber 2017-03-19 at 10:58

On another team he’d sit around 20th right now I’m guessing

Curious to know where Toews and Djoos are on the list.

    • Dobber 2017-03-19 at 10:57

Toews is 51. Djoos is 71

Keep in mind too, that the rating difference between 50th and 110th is 5.0 – practically equal value. Similar to the difference between 19th and 33rd for example. The best of the group stands tall with fewer peers…and then you have this large group of guys in the next group – and a bigger group of guys in the tier below that.

Where does McAvoy jump up to = 3? 2? 1?
