Fantasy Take: Hemsky Signs With Habs

Ian Gooding

2017-07-03

The Montreal Canadiens have signed winger Ales Hemsky to a one-year, $1 million contract.

Hemsky was limited to just 15 games last season with the Dallas Stars, scoring seven points. In his previous three seasons, Hemsky’s totals ranged between 32 and 43 points.

This signing signals the end of Alexander Radulov in Montreal, as they are signing a much cheaper winger to a shorter term. The Canadiens and Stars are essentially swapping wingers with the more productive Radulov signing in Dallas. The Habs now have $14 million left to try to sign Andrei Markov and Alex Galchenyuk, among others.

The playmaking Hemsky fits in as a third-liner on the Habs, with a possibility of moving up to the second line. He also seems suited for the Habs’ second-unit power play. Hemsky is a mid-ceiling scorer that is a potential injury risk, so he’s only suited for deep leagues at this point in his career.

Players this helps

  1. Hemsky (secures an NHL job for at least one more season)
  2. Brendan Gallagher (could move up to the top line with Radulov departing)

Players this hurts

  1. No one (Hemsky takes Radulov’s place on the roster)

Finally! A GM signs a player for what they’re worth! A good addition if he manages to play 60+ games.
