No Tolvanen? I’d draft him ahead of quite a number of this list, no?

    • Dobber 2017-10-11 at 08:44

      Ranked 223
Our experience with Nashville prospects is generally a longer wait than most teams, no? Fiala, Aberg, Kamenev, Trenin, etc. Bench space is valuable and I’d rather take a chance with a 15% chance guy who is ready now and can be replaced next year by another 15% chance guy and the year after by another 15% chance guy, etc…then grab a 60% chance guy and sit on him for four or five years and perhaps wind up with nothing

      • Baabz 2017-10-11 at 10:46

At the rate Tolvanen is producing with men in the KHL, based on trade value alone I would take him in 25-40 range. Maybe I’m wrong, but I can’t see Nashville risking to lose Tolvanen long term to the KHL. His current KHL contract is one year with a possibility of extension… but if he continues to perform at this pace, I bet NAS could open the doors a lot quicker than to these aforementioned prospects. No?

        • SBN 2017-10-11 at 15:39

Im with Dobber, way too early to jump on the Tolvanen band wagon. Fiala went almost PPG for over 100games in the AHL before even a whiff of NHL ice time. Even on his current contract where he could walk and come to the NHL next offseason, the risk is too real that he signs a new contract and stays in the KHL.

      • Dobber 2017-10-11 at 11:00

Wow, between the two comments and the two emails I got this morning in the first two hours of posting this, people are in love with this guy! With my +/- 5.0 rating rule, Tolvanen is between 134th and 260th. I’m fine with that range. If we get our rocks off over his big 16 KHL games, then I guess Ryan Hartman is a 100-point guy. Tolvanen is barely outscoring Matt Gilroy and Nick Jensen, his teammate. How did they do? Let’s not forget that the KHL has kept Kaprizov and Shalunov for the next three years so there’s a risk. I’m 100% comfortable with Tolvanen where he is. If he continues at this pace for another month, he’ll get into the Top 200. But you won’t see any premature e-rank-ulation here today.

  2. Marc Edge 2017-10-11 at 16:41

    so you’re back?

  3. Dean Youngblood 2017-10-11 at 20:16

I see my boy Jesper Bratt made his way onto the list after his omission last month ;). Got a feeling he’ll climb into the top 10 soon enough.

    You’re welcome

    • Dobber 2017-10-11 at 21:14

That was a nice call. I’ve never seen a player go from mediocre numbers in the Swedish second league, to instant NHL impact before. Never. But so far he’s doing it

  4. Tony Broadway 2017-10-14 at 17:08

I’m a bit confused how to use this list – on one hand Dobber has Kaprizov in the 40s while Tolvanen is listed in his 200s (both only with KHL sample sizes – Tolvanen’s is much smaller but has 1st round NHL draft pedigree). I also see guys like Axel Holmstrom and Kirby Rychel who have limited upside and have seen their development stalled falling somewhere in the middle. Is this list saying I should be making those trades (Holmstrom for Tolvanen) in a dynasty league? Am I expecting better upside from Kerby Rychel? I also see Bratt jump 200(!) places in a month – how am I supposed to make sense of that when valuing these guys in fantasy for present or long term value?

    • Dobber 2017-10-14 at 18:27

Bratt – extremely rare. A low draft pick, mediocre numbers in the Swedish second league and a huge NHL impact right away. Never seen it before, probably won’t see it again. An anomaly.

Rychel – modest upside, low NHL certainty, but wait time is near-zero. Either he makes it or he doesn’t but at least we won’t waste a roster space for five years waiting to find out.

Tolvanen – you’ll see him move up if he continues his great production, but IMO four years away. Kaprizov could be a star right now, but is under a three year contract so is three years away. May see him move down.

Tough to balance certainty vs. upside vs. wait time. And different fantasy teams have different needs among those three criteria

      • Tony Broadway 2017-10-14 at 21:13

Thank you for the explanation. I own both Tolvanen and Kaprizov in leagues and also find it hard to gauge value there. Some teams can’t do the wait and therefore their value is nil, but some can swallow it and would have them much higher on this list – tough to represent value for all, I guess.
