Auston Matthews is currently day to day.
Not many new developments this week so we review updates on existing injuries. Keep in mind that if long-term timelines have recently been announced, it usually takes a while to get a solid update. If you ever have a question regarding a player, you can reach me @BrennanDeSouza on Twitter!
The Big Guns (>75% owned in Yahoo Leagues)
Carey Price – It would seem that the Canadiens’ goaltender has taken a break from skating because he hasn’t made any progress since he resumed skating last week. Both the team and Price maintain that the injury isn’t too serious and he should be back soon (still not providing a definite timeline). Price also mentioned that if we were in the midst of playoff hockey he would be starting. So, we can infer that everyone just wants him to get back to 100% before returning to action. Charlie Lindgren’s play has made this whole process easier for the Habs, as he sports a 3-1-1 record, 1.24 GAA and .964 SV%. I have a feeling that the Carey Price that returns will be the Carey Price we know and love, so that buy-low window is closing quickly.
Brad Marchand – After totaling 85 points in 81 games last season, Brad Marchand got off to a good start this year with 15 points in 14 games. He missed a couple of games, then played a couple of games, and will miss the next couple of games (Wednesday and Thursday night against the Ducks and Kings) with an undisclosed injury. Nothing specific has been made public yet, but he will be reassessed Friday, so expect a better update then.
Rasmus Ristolainen – Shortly after I informed you Ristolainen was day-to-day, coach Phil Housley updated his status as week-to-week. Naturally, I’ll be back next week to report a month-to-month status. In all seriousness, this doesn’t bode well for the Sabres who are currently on a three-game slide in which they conceded 11 goals. The very fact that his status was updated shows the injury was more severe than the team thought, let’s just hope it doesn’t have an impact on the rest of his career.
Auston Matthews – Well the Leafs are undefeated without Auston Matthews in the lineup. The team won all three of their games in the absence of their superstar, so there’s definitely no pressure to rush him back. Originally the injury was labelled “soreness” and came with a day-to-day status. Since Matthews has been skating, and a fair amount of time has passed, he should be good to go on Thursday night when the Toronto takes on New Jersey.
William Nylander – Send him your chicken noodle soup and wishes to get well soon! While Nylander was sick earlier in the week, he has since been spotted on the ice and should be in the lineup against the Devils on Thursday.
Mike Smith – The Flames’ goaltender left Monday’s game against the Blues with an undisclosed injury. While it was a good sign to see him on the bench after the first period, it is best to consider him day-to-day until the team gives us a better update.
The Second Liners (40%-75% owned in Yahoo Leagues)
Marcus Johansson – Has resumed light skating on his own and working out off the ice. As I’ve mentioned countless times, concussions can be very unpredictable so no definite timeline. Certainly a step in the right direction though!
Marc-Andre Fleury – Has returned to the ice, but at the risk of sounding like a broken record have to be very careful when dealing with concussions. Speaking of broken records Maxime Lagace is currently 2-6 with a 3.58 GAA and .876 SV%. He’s breaking records of worst goaltending performances in franchise history! To be fair, he is the fourth string goalie on an expansion team, so we probably should have seen this coming.
Alex Wennberg – After making a name for himself last season with 59 points in 80 games, many were hoping for much of the same from the Blue Jackets’ forward. Which makes his nine points in 18 games of this campaign that much more underwhelming. As disappointing as he has been, his 3.4% shooting percentage should see an increase as the season progresses. This injury has been a pretty recent development, so as of right now coach Tortorella has only informed us that he’s day-to-day.
The Depth Guys (10%-40% owned in Yahoo Leagues)
Nolan Patrick – The rookie has been skating, and according to coach Dave Hakstol, many aspects of his game have returned to the level they need to be at. While the Flyers are optimistic Patrick returns on Thursday in Winnipeg (little extra motivation with that being is home city), it’s always difficult to judge a concussion.
Charlie Coyle – Has been skating and making good progress. While it is reassuring to see he hasn’t experienced any setbacks, he’s still a ways away from returning.
David Krejci – Travelling with the team and should be back within the next three games!
Ryan Miller – Day-to-day. Lower body. That is all. Carry on.
The Mr. Irrelevants (<10% owned in Yahoo Leagues)
Mathieu Perreault – The Jets’ forward would like to be in the lineup Thursday against the Flyers, and could likely reclaim a spot in the top 6. Keep an eye out to see how the lines move around in Winnipeg and if players like Kyler Connor are still fantasy relevant when all is said and done.
Zack Smith – Out for three weeks with a dislocated thumb. 1-2-3-4 I declare a thumb war, 4-3-2-1 who will be the strongest one?
