Russ

2017-11-21

This week, we’ll take a look at the top scorers since the beginning of November and because this is the Eastern Edge, we’ll focus on players from the Eastern Conference.

All statistics are prior to Monday’s scheduled games.

The first thing I’ll mention, is that it’s a bit of an unfair comparison when some guys (and teams) have played seven games, while others have played as many as 10. That’s why I included the points per game column. I settled on sorting by actual points because you can have a high points-per-game number, but without the actual points, it doesn’t really matter.

Of the 34 names above, only 13 are from the Eastern Conference. It doesn’t hurt that both Edmonton and Minnesota have played 10 games each. On the season, six of the top ten scorers reside in the West.

There are only two defensemen on the list with the Caps John Carlson averaging a point per game over 10 games and a somewhat surprising Nick Leddy. The Isles defender has nine points in eight contests and only three of those coming via the power play.

Teuvo Teravainen and Sebastian Aho are two names that I wouldn’t associate at the top of any scoring list with the likes of Connor McDavid and Johnny Gaudreau. They are catching fire on a line with Jordan Staal.

Mathew Barzal has 12 points in eight games, obviously propelled by that large five assist night on 5 November against Colorado. Don’t think that his big night was just a blip; over his last 11 games, he has 16 points, so even if you take out that massive five-point effort, he would still have 11 points in 10 games. He’s arrived.

Just Missed The Cut

Other Eastern Conference players who were only a point away from making the above list include your usual collection of talented skaters: Evgeni Malkin, John Tavares, Claude Giroux, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Mark Stone round out the unsurprising.

Dylan Larkin is having a nice bounce back season in Detroit. He broke on to the scene with a 45-point debut and followed it up last year with a disappointing 32-point effort. The move to center seems to agree with Larkin, he’s sitting with 20 points in 21 games on the season.

Devils rookie Nico Hishier and the Leafs Mitch Marner are turning it on this month. Over the last 10 games, Marner has spent the majority of his even strength ice time with Tyler Bozak and James van Riemsdyk. Hischier has matched Taylor Hall point for point in November.

Torey Krug has eight points in only seven November contests and 11 in 16 overall.

The Rest of the Field

Boston’s David Krejci now has two games under his belt after missing 11 matches to injury, although he has yet to register a point since returning.

Anytime Jack Eichel is tied with Benoit Pouliot in points, regardless of when we look at the statistics, can’t be good for Eichel or the Sabres. He’s still on pace for 66 points though.

Three Blue Jackets are tied for the lead in team scoring during the month of November. Boone Jenner, Oliver Bjorkstrand and Brandon Dubinsky all have seven points.

The Red Wings Justin Abdelkader has seven points in as many games.

Aaron Ekblad has one point in nine November contests. Keith Yandle is receiving the first unit duties in Florida, which leave Ekblad with mop up minutes on the power play.

The New York Rangers have a trio of players tied with seven points in eight games, Mika Zibanejad, Kevin Shattenkirk and the venerable Rick Nash.

Outside of the Flyers top line, there is no one else scoring in Philly. Both Voracek and Giroux have already been mentioned and Sean Couturier has seven points so far this month. Next on the list are Wayne Simmonds and Shayne Gostisbehere with three points.

After Kucherov and Stamkos, Victor Hedman, Yanni Gourde and Vladislav Namestnikov all have seven points in seven matches. Brayden Point has six points for the Lightning.

The Leafs Patrick Marleau and Morgan Rielly have seven points in nine games.

Alexander Ovechkin is tied with Chandler Stephenson with five points in nine November matches. That won’t last for either of those two. Nicklas Backstrom is the guy to focus on here. He has been outscored in the month by Tom Wilson! Backstrom has a mere three points in nine games and 15 points in 20 contests on the year. He’s on pace for a 62-point season, a far cry from the 86 points he registered last year. He would be a solid buy low if his current owner is getting frustrated.

Thanks for reading.

In a G/A/Hits/Blocks league should I drop Nick Ritchie for Barzal? Hits/Blocks are worth 0.2 pts each but Ritchie has been dropping in TOI in the last 2 weeks.

    • Russ 2017-11-21 at 22:30

Honestly, I would do that in a heartbeat and find your hits that Ritchie provided from another source. Barzal is really showing his offensive side. Well done tracking the TOI (and PPTOI), that is one of the most important stats for us poolies.

Thoughts on Abdelkader? Think he has a chance at 50 pts with good gritty peripherals?

    • Russ 2017-11-22 at 20:47

His career high is 44 points (in 71 games). I think he’ll have a career year points-wise, plus as you say, he’ll add some grit. Will he hit 50? I think he’ll come close, like say 48…close enough?
