Geek of the Week: Vincent Trocheck

2017-12-24

In spite of playing for a struggling Panthers squad, Vincent Trocheck has delivered for fantasy teams.

Through the first 30+ games of the season, things have not gone how the Florida Panthers have hoped. With only 15 wins in 36 games, they currently sit 26th in the league with 35 points and have been one of the league’s worst clubs. Despite winning their division two years ago while accumulating 47 wins, the Panthers have failed to reach those same heights since, instead falling towards the bottom of the league. One of the only bright spots this year has come from Vincent Trocheck, who’s having a monster year and is finally capitalizing on his potential. Both the Panthers and the fantasy owners who drafted him are lucky to have him this season as he delivers immense value.

Drafted in the third round in the 2011 draft by the Panthers, Trocheck entered the league as a 20 year old, posting eight points in his first 20 games. After the next season where he posted 22 points in 50 games, Trocheck hit 50 points for the first time in his career, posting 53 points in 76 games as a 22 year old. The future looked bright for Trocheck and he’s only been better this year, recording 35 points through his first 36 games.

In fantasy hockey leagues, Trocheck brings just as much value. Using our Fantasy Hockey Geek tool, we can see just how much value Trocheck has provided. In our sample, we will be using an average 12-team H2H Yahoo league measuring G, A, SOG, Hits, and PIM.

Out of all NHL players, Trocheck ranks 13th in overall fantasy value, beating out the likes of Drew Doughty, Jamie Benn, and Victor Hedman. There’s no doubt that Trocheck’s impressive point totals are a major factor for his high value, as he is currently tied for the 19th most points in the league. But what makes him so dangerous throughout fantasy hockey circles is his peripherals, as he’s an excellent contributor in other categories like shots on goal, power-play points, and hits. Trocheck’s 117 shots in only 36 games averages out to 3.25 shots per game, putting him on track for over 266 shots by the end of the season. Only 15 players have averaged more shots than Trocheck so far this season and only five of those players have more points. And whie Trocheck isn’t destroying in the power-play points or hits category, he won’t hurt you in either category, providing his fair share of value in each.

While Trocheck doesn’t have the name value that guys like Tyler Seguin and Johnny Gaudreau have, Trocheck has been just as value in fantasy hockey this year. The future is bright for the young Panther forward as he becomes a key contributor to the club and an important part of the team.
