DFS Saturday: Superstar Stars

Saturday, January 12 consists of a 10-game main slate beginning at 7pm EST. A five-game winning streak is on the line when Erik Karlsson’s San Jose Sharks entertain the Ottawa Senators. The 9-0-1 in their last ten Tampa Bay Lightning will look to increase their point lead on the rest of the NHL in a divisional bout with the Sabres in Buffalo, New York. An equally hot team in the Pittsburgh Penguins will face the last place Los Angeles Kings at the Staples Center. The biggest NHL headline of today though has to be the fact that there’s been no headline at all with Brandon Pirri’s name. I fully expect him to be sent down and recalled five times over before Vegas and Chicago play tonight. Putting all the shenanigans of the Golden Knights aside, let’s take a look at some players who have been red hot as of late and can be used in your lineups tonight.
C – Tyler Seguin (DK $7,100, FD $7,800)
Seguin has been a top-five forward over the last two weeks on both DraftKings and FanDuel in terms of average fantasy points per game. The Stanley Cup champion has really turned it on as of late, recording 11 points over a seven-game point streak. Perhaps you can recall when Dallas Stars CEO Jim Lites called out his superstars Seguin and Benn after a 2-0 Stars win against the Predators in late December. Tyler Seguin’s seven-game point streak actually began the day after this outrageous incident occured. Calling your best players “f***** horse-sh**” is definitely a bold strategy, a bold strategy that has paid dividends thus far. Seguin will shoot for an eight-game point streak when he faces off against Jordan Binnington and the St. Louis Blues on Saturday night.
W – Joonas Donskoi (DK $3,900, FD $4,900)
Donskoi has been one of the most productive wingers over the last two weeks on both of the major DFS sites. The Florida Panthers draft pick out of Raahe, Finland has been tearing up the NHL since Christmas scoring eight times in eight games. He’s also netted the game-winning goal in both of the Sharks last two games making him the leader on the team in game-winning goals this season. The 28th-place Ottawa Senators will be in San Jose on Saturday night. Ottawa’s goalies have combined for one of the better high-danger save percentages in the NHL since Christmas. Despite the surprisingly above-average numbers from the current goaltending staff of the Ottawa Senators, the team has still given up the most goals in the NHL this season. A game against the Sens presents a good opportunity for Donskoi to continue padding his stats.
W – Patrick Kane (DK $7,700, FD $8,500)
Kane has been the second-best winger on both DraftKings and FanDuel over the past two weeks if we look at average fantasy points per game. #88 has seven points in just his last three games, and has points in 11 of his last 12 games. Kane also hasn’t recorded less than two shots in a game in his last 18. Dylan Strome has heightened Kane’s game since being traded to the Blackhawks from Arizona. At 5v5 this season, Kane has been on the ice for 2.91 goals for per 60 minutes without Strome compared to 3.93 goals for per 60 minutes with Strome. The leader in average TOI per game among all NHL wingers will look to keep up his extremely consistent production against the Golden Knights tonight.
D – Jared Spurgeon (DK $5,300, FD $5,300)
Out of all the defensemen playing in the 10 game main slate on Saturday, Spurgeon ranks fifth on both DraftKings and FanDuel for average fantasy points per game over the past two weeks. This high ranking is largely due to his recent uptick in production where he has produced three goals and seven points in his last five games. Spurgeon and the Wild are up against the most penalized team in the NHL on Saturday: the Detroit Red Wings. The Wings also have the eighth-worst penalty kill percentage over the last month. During this period of time, the Red Wings have been horrific at preventing scoring chances while down a man. Spurgeon is a regular on the power play, and he actually saw more power-play time than Ryan Suter in his last game out. The Wings are also on a road back-to-back, making Spurgeon even more of an enticing option tonight.
D – Kris Letang (DK $6,100, FD $7,100)
Letang is the third best defensemen in Saturday’s main slate in terms of average fantasy points per game on DraftKings and FanDuel over the last two weeks. The Frenchman has points in eight of his last nine games and 10 of his last 12. Letang has also been blocking a plethora of shots lately. He has been averaging almost twice as many blocks over his last five games than his 2018-19 season average. Kris Letang, who was just added to the 2019 NHL All-Star roster yesterday as one of the “Last Men In”, has been averaging 26:05 of icetime per game this season, which is good for fourth in the entire league. The Pittsburgh Penguins put up a touchdown plus the extra point against the Ducks last night, and now they get a date with the last-place Los Angeles Kings. Letang and company are all in play Saturday night.
