Here is this week’s latest in the world of injuries! As always, if you have any questions regarding a player’s status feel free to give me a shout on Twitter. If you really want to make a 200 IQ move, follow me @BrennanDeSouza to see injury updates as soon as teams announce them. While you’re making all these smart moves, you might as well pick up Dobber’s Midseason guide. I should warn you though, only the most intelligent fantasy hockey GMs can get their hands on this guide. Click here to see if you’re one of them.
Ryan Miller – The sprained knee is expected to keep him out until after the All-Star break and bye week. At this point, a return in early February seems realistic. John Gibson will continue to be a workhorse until Miller is back to give him rest on a more frequent basis.
Jake DeBrusk – Is dealing with a lower-body injury that might keep him out of the lineup on Wednesday against the Flyers. The team expects to know more about DeBrusk’s status on Wednesday morning. After tallying 43 points in 70 games during a great rookie season, DeBrusk seems to have fallen victim to the dreaded sophomore slump. Let’s hope for more production in the second half of the season.
James Neal – Missed Tuesday’s practice with an illness. The team hasn’t yet revealed how this affects his status for Wednesday’s game against the Sabres. With just 10 points in 46 games, Neal is on pace for the worst season of his career. Those 81 points in 80 games of the 2011-2012 season are a distant memory now…
Jordan Staal – Has been skating but still no timetable for his return.
Kailer Yamamoto – There’s a chance he returns to the lineup on Wednesday when the Oilers take on the Canucks.
Oscar Klefbom – Is hoping to be medically cleared within the next couple of days, after which he would rejoin the team. In a perfect world, he’d start practicing before the All-Star break and return to the lineup shortly after. While on the topic of Edmonton’s blueline, it’s worth mentioning that Darnell Nurse has 17 points in his last 19 games!
Andrew Shaw – Hasn’t been skating but he’s doing a lot of off-ice training as he recovers from a neck injury. Shaw has been fantastic this season with 24 points in 36 games.
Miles Wood – The team hopes he can return from a lower-body injury before the All-Star game. New Jersey has two more games before the break, one against the Islanders on Thursday and one against the Ducks on Saturday.
Taylor Hall – We still don’t know exactly what kind of lower-body injury Hall is dealing with. What we do know is that he still hasn’t started skating and is sticking to off-ice workouts. The Devils play two more games before entering the All-Star break and bye week which gives them eight days off in total. While Hall was invited to the All-Star game, he’d be wise to sit out and rest. A return in late January/early February seems realistic at this point.
Cory Schneider – Has been facing shots recently but we still don’t know when this abdominal strain will stop bothering him.
Neal Pionk – Has been dealing with a lower-body injury for a while now, and it appears he’ll be on the shelf until after the All-Star break and bye week. After their time off, the Rangers will return to action on January 29th. Pionk should be back around that time. The 23-year-old has been great this season with 20 points in 42 games.
Kevin Hayes – While he has been skating in a no-contact jersey, a nagging upper-body injury continues to keep him out of the lineup. The Rangers have just two more games before they take eight days off to rest during the All-Star break and bye week. I wouldn’t expect to see Hayes in either of those games.
Colin White – The Senators have four games before the All-Star break and their bye week. Unfortunately, an upper-body injury will keep Colin White out of the lineup for all of those games. The 21-year-old rookie has an impressive 26 points in 44 games.
Craig Anderson – The Senators hope to have Anderson feature in one of the games they play back-to-back on Friday (against the Hurricanes) and Saturday (against the Blues).
Thomas Chabot – The Senators will get a huge boost to their lineup on Wednesday as Chabot will make his return after missing about three weeks with an upper-body injury. Now the team can finally crawl out of the basement so Colorado doesn’t get the first overall pick in this year’s draft!
Patric Hornqvist – Has been skating recently but as we all know, concussions can be very unpredictable. Hornqvist has a history of concussions, so the team would be wise to play this one safe and wait until he’s feeling 100% for more than just a few days in a row.
Justin Schultz – Joined Tuesday morning’s skate in a no-contact jersey and is travelling with the team as their road trip continues into Arizona on Friday and Vegas on Saturday. Unless he participates in a full practice between now and then, I wouldn’t expect him to play in either of those games.
Marc-Edouard Vlasic – While he skated on Monday, he remains day-to-day with a wrist injury.
Alexander Steen – Was expected to play at some point during the team’s road trip in which there’s just one more game – Thursday against the Bruins. After that, St Louis has three more games before All-Star weekend. Expect him to return before the break.
Elias Pettersson – The rookie sensation skated on Tuesday morning and hasn’t been ruled out for Wednesday’s game against the Oilers. He’s extremely close to a return but should be considered day-to-day until then. In case you were wondering, Pettersson is still very much leading the Calder race – second place Colin White is still behind by 16 points.
Colin Miller – Travelled with the team to Chicago and skated in the morning before Saturday’s game against the Blackhawks. Miller last played on December 17th and had five points in five games prior to this upper-body injury. We haven’t been given many updates on his status, but I’d expect him back sooner rather than later.
Reilly Smith – The Golden Knights forward has been out of the lineup since January 6th and hasn’t practiced since. We haven’t really been given any much information regarding the severity of the injury. It is worth noting that Vegas has three days off before hosting the Penguins on Saturday. So theoretically, Smith would have time to practice between now and then. In Smith’s absence, it appears both Max Pacioretty and Brandon Pirri have seen time on the top line with Jonathan Marchessault and William Karlsson.
Braden Holtby – This one’s not so much an official injury, but more of a situation to watch out for. Holtby was supposed to start on Tuesday against the Predators – the second half of a back to back – after Pheonix Copley started on Monday. However, Holtby was kept on the bench for precautionary reasons as it’s believed his eye hasn’t totally healed yet (he took a high stick in the eye from Cam Atkinson on Saturday). While it’s obviously a good sign he was able to back-up Copley (he was healthy enough to play if he absolutely had to), coach Todd Rierden revealed Copley was going to stay in the whole game, no matter how bad it got. It got pretty bad as the Capitals lost 7-2.
