2020-05-07

In the Keeping Karlsson Fantasy Hockey Podcast’s 31 Beats series, Elan and Brian are on a league-wide odyssey to explore the fantasy present and future landscapes of each of the NHL’s 31 teams, gathering info by interviewing the people who know them best: beat writers!

***

On our 6th instalment, Sheng Peng zooms in from Erik Karlsson‘s hockey home to bring us the goods on a surprisingly-low scoring team, the 2019-20 San Jose Sharks! Sheng shares his thoughts with us on whether or not the Sharks struggles should have come a surprise, and whether they’ll continue after the pause for the team as a whole. After that, we dig into each of the individual players, setting expectations for whether Burns and Karlsson can ever hit their highest notes again, and then discussing the potential for Hertl to put a team on his back, the possibility that Meier and Labanc can step forward again after stepping back, the amount of hope left for the Sharks’ crease, and what reserves may or may not be coming through the pipeline to help the cap-crunched team that’s fallen on hard times.

Players discussed on this episode include Erik Karlsson, Brent Burns, Joe Thornton, Logan Couture, Tomas Hertl, Timo Meier, Kevin Labanc, Martin Jones, Aaron Dell, Ryan Merkly, Noah Gregor and more.

Keeping Karlsson Short Shifts – The Wilkes-Jarry Penguins

Elizabeth and Lewis are back to take listeners through a host of power play changes that are giving managers the opportunity to get exposure to great players off the waiver wire, including Philly, Jersey, and Tampa talk. They also cover Jarry’s AHL demotion, Cooley’s ascension to the top-line and powerplay, and injuries to Tavares and Hintz. The duo wrap up with some hot and cold streak deep dives, including discussion of the Red Wings crazy powerplay success in the last ten games, whether Erik Gustafsson is rosterable or an overperforming illusion, Fantilli’s continued success, Merilainen as Hamburglar 2.0, and whether Schenn’s success and Neighbours’ lack thereof are likely to continue.
