Here's the latest injury news from across the NHL! If you're looking for information about a specific player and don't see their name in this article, there probably haven't been any significant updates about their progress since last week's article (thanks to @Harjas_Grewal for filling in for me last week). If you ever need injury updates for a specific player, shoot me a message on Twitter @BrennanDeSouza.
Conor Garland – Left Tuesday's practice early after he "tweaked something". The team should release more information about his status ahead of Wednesday night's game against the Wild. The Coyotes winger started strong with 14 points in his first 14 games but has posted 18 points in his last 31 appearances.
Linus Ullmark – The Sabres netminder is week-to-week with a lower-body injury. Considering there are just three weeks left in Buffalo's 2021 campaign, it seems unlikely he'll be back before the season ends. Ullmark managed a 9-6-3 record, 2.63 GAA and .917 save percentage behind a Sabres team that was pretty bad all year. I recommend you keep him on your watchlist for next season's fantasy drafts, as he's sure to be undervalued.
Carter Hutton – Has been skating on his own but there's no timetable for his return. There's no guarantee that Hutton gets any starts when he's healthy as Dustin Tokarski has taken over starting duties in Buffalo for the time being, posting a save percentage of .927 or better in each of his last five starts.
Teuvo Teravainen – Recently participated in a full practice and is currently travelling with the team. Coach Rod Brind'Amour hopes to have Teravainen back in the lineup at some point during Carolina's current road trip, which extends to April 27th and includes four more games. While it certainly seems like Teravainen is getting closer to a return, we have to keep in mind that recovering from a concussion is not a predictable process. The medical staff will continue to monitor his progress each day as they ensure he's responding well to the different checkpoints of his rehab.
Adam Boqvist – Is still day-to-day as he remains in concussion protocol.
Alex Nylander – Skated on Sunday, for the first time since undergoing knee surgery in late December – which came with a recovery timeline of four to six months.
Bowen Byram – Was close to returning from an upper-body injury when he joined the COVID-19 protocol list on April 9th. He was recently taken off the list, so we'll see if that upper-body injury had a chance to heal over the last two weeks.
Gustav Nyquist – We got official word that he won't be back this season, as he won't have enough time to recover from the shoulder surgery he had back in early November.
Roope Hintz – As @Harjas_Grewal highlighted in last week's Injury Ward, Hintz is dealing with a lingering lower-body injury and is going to be in and out of the lineup as the season progresses. He wasn't in the lineup on Tuesday – which was the second half of a back-to-back. Expect a similar trend going forward, with Hintz only playing one of two games in a back-to-back set. I feel like injuries have distracted us from his outstanding production this year, he has 37 points in 35 games, which translates to 95 points in a typical 82-game season.
Miro Heiskanen – Missed Tuesday's clash with the Red Wings due to a lower-body injury. I haven't seen any other updates as I write this, so I guess we consider him day-to-day until we hear otherwise.
Tyler Seguin – Will travel with the team to Detroit and is expected to practice with them over there. Last Monday, General Manager Jim Nill said that Seguin was about two weeks away from a return, so he's definitely getting close.
Joel Kiviranta – Has done some light skating and stick-handling as he recovers from a lower-body injury. With that being said, coach Rick Bowness recently said that Kiviranta was "a long ways away" from returning, so it doesn't sound like the 25-year-old forward will be back in the lineup any time soon.
Bobby Ryan – On April 9th, the Red Wings announced that Ryan would miss the rest of the season with an upper-body injury that could require surgery. He started strong with four goals in his first three games with Detroit but only managed three goals in his next 30 appearances.
Robby Fabbri – Has been skating but we haven't had many substantial updates over the course of his recovery from an upper-body injury. What seemed like a day-to-day issue has turned into Fabbri missing the team's last nine games.
Jujhar Khaira – Had some trouble finding his balance after a hit from Alexander Romanov during Monday's game against the Canadiens. He felt perfectly normal on Tuesday, but the team will perform a few tests over the next few days to ensure everything is all right.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins – Practiced with the team on Tuesday and could be in the lineup on Wednesday against the Habs, pending clearance from the medical staff.
Patric Hornqvist – Missed Tuesday's game against the Blue Jackets but wasn't injured. It seems coach Joel Quenneville just wanted to give Hornqvist a rest, probably to keep the 34-year-old forward fresh down the final stretch of the regular and into the playoffs. Check out this week's Eastern Edge for a quick look at Hornqvist's recent struggles.
Mackenzie Weegar – Is expected to return from an upper-body injury on Thursday against the Hurricanes. He started slow with four points in his first 12 games, but has 21 points in his last 33 appearances.
Carter Verhaeghe – Was on the ice Monday but we haven't had any significant updates since we heard on April 13th that he was week-to-week with an upper-body injury.
Carey Price – Will be unavailable for the next week due to concussion protocol. He sustained the injury during Monday's game against the Oilers, when Alex Chiasson skated through the crease and make contact with Price's head. Jake Allen will take over starting duties in Price's absence. Allen has been solid this season, posting a 2.52 GAA and .914 save percentage through 19 games. However, he's suffered from a lack of goal support, resulting in a 7-8-4 record. Cayden Primeau should also play this week as Montreal has a back-to-back against Calgary on Friday and Saturday.
Filip Forsberg – Is officially week-to-week with an upper-body injury. According to General Manager David Poile, it sounds like Forsberg could return at some point next week.
Eeli Tolvanen – His status has been upgraded from week-to-week to day-to-day as he gets closer to returning from a lower-body injury. He skated with the team during Wednesday morning's practice but his status for Wednesday evening's game in Chicago hasn't yet been determined.
Mark Borowiecki – Remains week-to-week with an upper-body injury that has kept him sidelined since March 11th.
Mackenzie Blackwood – Missed Tuesday's game against the Penguins with an upper-body injury that he sustained on Sunday against the Rangers. He skated with the team on Tuesday morning and hasn't been ruled out for Thursday's rematch with Pittsburgh.
Ty Smith – Is officially day-to-day with an upper-body injury. He wasn't on the ice for Tuesday's practice and his status for Thursday's clash with the Penguins remains up in the air.
Jesper Bratt – Has been skating recently as he recovers from a lower-body injury. Bratt is currently travelling with the team on a road trip that extends to April 25th and includes three more games. On April 18th, coach Lindy Ruff said that Bratt could return in a game or two. The Devils have played two games since then so it's fair to assume that Bratt is extremely close to a return and could be available on Thursday against Pittsburgh. Check out this week's Eastern Edge for a quick look at Bratt's impressive recent production.
Pavel Zacha – Has been skating recently and is currently travelling with the team. On April 18th, coach Lindy Ruff said that Zacha could return in a game or two. The Devils have played two games since then, so Zacha could be available as soon as Thursday night against the Penguins.
Jacob Trouba – Left Tuesday's game against the Islanders after a hit from Matt Martin and is officially day-to-day with an upper-body injury.
Carter Hart – Is dealing with a mild knee sprain and won't travel with the team to New York – which means he won't be available for at least two more games. Coach Alain Vigneault is confident it's not a serious injury and expects Hart to practice with the team when they return home after this two-game trip.
Evgeni Malkin – Skated with the team on Tuesday but wasn't taking any contact. He wasn't on the ice for Wednesday's practice, so I'd speculate we're not yet at the stage where he's feeling well enough to skate consistently. Once he's cleared for contact and is on the ice consistently, we can start expecting a return.
Kasperi Kapanen – Was a full participant in Wednesday's practice. This marks the first time he was able to take contact and skate with his teammates since suffering a lower-body injury on March 24th. There's no concrete date set for his return, but it seems he's getting close.
Brandon Tanev – Hasn't started skating yet as he remains sidelined with an upper-body injury.
Jordan Kyrou – Has been sidelined with a stomach bug but was skating on a regular line with Brayden Schenn and Mike Hoffman during Wednesday's practice, so I expect he'll be available for Thursday's game against Colorado.
Vince Dunn – Participated in Wednesday's practice and is expected to play against the Avalanche on Thursday.
Robert Thomas – Looked a little tentative during Wednesday's practice, which makes sense since this was his first practice since he suffered an upper-body injury on April 9th. While he hasn't been ruled out for Thursday's clash with Colorado, it seems unlikely he'll be ready by then.
Steven Stamkos – Was placed on long-term injured reserve as he recovers from a lower-body injury and won't be eligible to return until May 5th. It's important to note that his return could be later than that, depending on how he progresses. He's expected to start skating within the next few days, which should give us a better idea of whether or not he'll actually be able to return before the end of the regular season. The team reported that this injury is not related to the core muscle surgery he had last year.
Nikita Kucherov – Has been progressing well but hasn't been cleared for contact and isn't expected to return before the regular season ends.
Ilya Mikheyev – Is officially day-to-day with an undisclosed injury. The injury isn't believed to be anything serious and it sounds like he could be available for Thursday's game against the Jets.
Zach Hyman – The Leafs forward will be sidelined for at least two weeks with a sprained MCL. He's been excellent this season, posting 33 points through 43 games, which translates to 63 points in a typical 82-game season.
Frederik Andersen – On Monday, he skated his teammates for the first time in a month. He's travelling with the team on their current road trip, which extends to April 28th and includes three more games. While he's progressing well, there's no timetable for his return from a lower-body injury.
Elias Pettersson – There's no timetable for his return from an upper-body injury that's kept him out since March 2nd. He continues to skate and rehab, but he's been doing that for a while now. The fact that he's skating doesn't tell us much, considering he's dealing with an upper-body injury. General Manager provided an ominous response when asked about the start forward, saying he didn't know when Petterson would be back, "if he's going to be back at all" this season.
Reilly Smith – Won't be in the lineup on Wednesday against the Sharks and is officially day-to-day with an undisclosed injury.
Ryan Reaves – Is currently on long-term injured reserve and won't be eligible to return until the last week of the regular season.
Justin Schultz – The Capitals defenseman is day-to-day with a lower-body injury. He hasn't been skating recently, so I'd say it's unlikely he features in Thursday's game against the Islanders.
Zdeno Chara – Sustained an injury when he blocked a shot during Saturday's game against the Flyers. He participated in Tuesday's practice which makes me optimistic that he'll be available against the Islanders on Thursday.
