The Journey: Top Rising Forward Prospects – April

Welcome back to The Journey. In last week's edition, I reviewed some of the top prospects heading into the 2021 NHL Entry Draft.

This week, I will be looking at Dobber's Fantasy Prospect Forward list. While some of these have remained relatively stationary throughout the season, there are a few that have made tremendous jumps lately that are certainly worthy of discussion.

Here are the latest risers.

Eeli Tolvanen, Predators (Ranked: Feb: 37, Mar: 26, Apr: 5)

While it took longer than some expected, it appears Tolvanen has truly arrived. The 21-year-old's play as of late has helped turn the Nashville Predators season around, as they currently occupy the final playoff spot in the Central Division after a few slow months to begin the year which had many expecting them to be sellers at the deadline.

While Tolvanen's season totals of 10 goals and 19 points in 31 games don't look bad, they are much more impressive when 10 of those points have come in his last eight games played. Unfortunately, he hasn't been able to play since April 6 due to a lower-body injury, though it does sound like he is making progress and should be able to return soon.

This season won't be enough to garner Tolvanen much if any Calder Trophy consideration, but regardless his recent development is extremely exciting for a Predators organization who seems to always lack scoring forwards. It remains to be seen whether or not he can sustain this success over an extended period of time, but given the amount of skill here, it would not be surprising.

Cole Caufield, Canadiens (Ranked: Feb: 11, Mar: 10, Apr: 6)

At the time of writing this, Caufield has not yet made his NHL debut, but that could very soon be changing. What a year it has been for the Habs prospect. It started off at the 2021 World Juniors, where despite him not playing his best hockey, he was still able to help Team USA capture a gold medal. Then there was his 30 goal, 52-point season for the University of Wisconsin which earned him the Hobey Baker Award.

Since finishing his college season, Caufield has made his professional hockey debut and continued to impress. In two games with Laval Rocket, he scored three goals and added an assist. The 20-year-old forward has since been called up to the Canadiens taxi squad, and fans are hopeful he will make his debut soon. In order to do so, the Habs will have to do some roster juggling to comply with the salary cap, but given their struggles lately, they need to figure out a way to get it done.

Caufield sliding to the Canadiens at 15th overall in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft looks more and more like a mistake by many other teams each passing day, and although he has yet to play an NHL game, he truly appears to be worth all the hype. While his size is still in question, he has been able score at an elite pace through every level he has played, and there is no reason to think that won't continue in the NHL.

Cole Perfetti, Jets (Ranked: Feb: 14, Mar: 13, Apr: 9)

Though he is only 19 years old, the Winnipeg Jets may very soon have an NHL ready prospect in Perfetti. The young centerman was drafted 10th overall at the 2020 NHL Entry Draft after a 37-goal, 111-point season with the Saginaw Spirit in the OHL. Like Caufield, he also participated in the 2021 World Juniors, posting two goals and six points in seven games for Team Canada.

Due to the OHL's season being delayed and eventually cancelled, Perfetti has spent this year in the AHL with the Manitoba Moose. While most players his age would struggle to adjust to professional hockey, he has done it with relative ease. In 24 games, he has scored six goals and is second on his team with 17 points.

Given how successful he has been with the Moose this season, there may be a few teams that passed on Perfetti this past October that would like a do-over. Though it is still very early, he looks like he has all the potential to become a legitimate NHL star in just a few short years. Jets fans should be very excited.

Vitali Kravtsov, Rangers (Ranked: Feb: 31, Mar: 30, Apr: 22)

To say Kravtsov's career path since being drafted ninth overall by the New York Rangers in 2018 has been unusual would be an understatement. He began the 2019-20 season with the Hartford Wolf Pack in the AHL, but struggled early on and chose to return to the KHL and play for Traktor Chelyabinsk. However, he struggled there as well, and was demoted to Traktor's affiliate, which in turn resulted in him returning to Hartford.

With both the NHL and AHL 2020-21 seasons being delayed, Kravtsov started the year out with Traktor, and was clearly much more comfortable. In 49 games, he recorded 16 goals and 24 points. The young Russian forward has since returned to North America, suiting up for 10 games with the Rangers. Though he started off slow, he has looked more comfortable recently and was able to score his first NHL goal against the New Jersey Devils this past week.

There is no denying that Kravtsov still has plenty of room to grow as a player, but given where he was at this time last year, the Rangers have to be thrilled with the improvement so far. While he will likely still have some growing pains going forward, the future is looking much brighter than it did a year ago.
